"You didn't seem comfortable eating, and it was a distraction for me. I hate distractions while eating," Zane said behind her, but she didn't spare him a glance.
"Then you could have told me about it, and I'll braid it myself. You've done enough." Anastasia said.
Augustus fixed his gaze on Zane and noticed he looked somewhat hurt, but, as usual, his haughty expression masked it quickly again.
"I thought learning to care and love again would feel great," Zane said. "Perhaps our friendship should be more than friends with benefits, but I was going too far." His voice cracked with emotions he tried to hold back, but it betrayed him. It upset him that he was feeling this way for Anastasia, just for the fleeting moments they spent together.
Her cold reaction from the previous night and rejection today, ached his heart bitterly for a reason he was still uncertain of. He couldn't discern this feeling.
