Chapter 48 - Chapter XXIII - Healing Magic (part 1)

"The basis of magic is yourself. Your energy, your mind, your emotions. That is what defines 'your' magic."

She explains the basis first. We moved to a new spot where we can sit on the ground. Right now we are at the park, on the grass. She sat right in front of me about a meter away.

I simply nodded at her explanation, so she continued with the teaching.

"Your heart, your emotions, defines your magic's stability. While your energy and strength defines its power. Your mind..."

She stopped for a while and closed her eyes.

"... Defines control."

She had both of her hands opened, facing each other. And in the middle, a glimmer of light can be seen. She opened her eyes after the light showed up.

"Whoa... Is this..."

"This is the physical form of healing magic. As you can see, it shows a gentle, peaceful light. Unlike a fireball, or a lightning strike, where all you can feel is fear and hatred. A healing magic, is the magic of peace."

She lifted the ball of light with her left hand and blew it with her mouth. The ball of light floats in the air, before dissipating into the air.

"Now you try it."

What.

"Wait, that's it? Isn't there anything else?

"Well, what you just saw is just the Beginner level of healing magic. If you want to learn the Intermediate, you have to at least learn the Beginner first."

"Oh..."

"It's all right. Healing magic is the easiest magic to learn. So, please. Try it."

She smiled at me while looking at my confusion.

Though it may be the easiest, I don't know if I can actually do it.

I tried what she did. I opened my hands to each other.

"Try to focus the energy on your palms. Feel as if it was sweating, can't wait to help other people."

Okay, that last part was nonsensical.

I focused my magic energy on the palms of my hands. It's actually quite easy to move around my energy now that I have tried it a couple times. So learning this might be easier than I thought.

In just a thought, the skin on my palms started to glow pink-ish.

"That's very good! Now, try to focus the air in the middle of your hands. Try to make it a circle shape."

"Hmm."

I tried what she said. I focused the energy in the air in the middle of my palms. The light moved from my hand to the air in the middle. Like it's being sucked in.

"That's… amazing."

The ball of light is now hovering in the middle of my hand. I tried focusing the shape as I moved my hand around. The ball followed my hand.

"Okay… now what?"

"Now... you can try to heal people."

"Huh?"

Wait, that's it?

I thought there would be more. Is it healing?

She took out a needle from her pocket. Then she struck the needle on her arm.

"Wha-"

"It's fine. This much isn't painful at all."

She put back the needle in her bag while her hand was bleeding slightly.

"Now, put your hand just a little bit above my wound."

I approached her and put my right hand just a few centimeters above her wound.

"Now try to focus on moving your energy all the way to the wound."

Just like that?

I focused the energy through my palms, then to the wound. The energy moved from my palms to the wound like it was being sucked.

"Wahh… okay. You can stop now."

I lifted my hand.

She wiped the blood with a tissue and looked at her hand and smiled.

"Congratulations."

She turned her arm to me. The wound was completely closed.

"You just learned healing magic."

That was it, seriously?

"But that was a simple wound. What should I do about sickness?"

"Ah, for sickness like flu or stuff like that… that requires a higher tier of magic."

"Higher tier?"

"Yes. A single magic has multiple tiers. Right now you are at the beginner tier. Above that, it is Intermediate. And for healing magic to heal sickness, you have to be at least Intermediate."

"Then, can you teach me how to use Intermediate healing?"

"Hmm… It won't be as easy as this. But seeing how you just did it in your first try, I guess I could teach you."

"Thanks."

"No problem. Do you want to start immediately?"

"Yes, please."

"All right."

She stood up. Her hands are making an angle with her middle fingers touching one another. Right in the middle of that angle, a light appears.

The light appears to be brighter than the previous one. She moved it around with ease, without having to follow her hands. The ball of light just floats in the air while her hand is doing something.

"This is the form of an Intermediate healing magic."

"Woah. So it floats without being controlled?"

"No, it is controlled. But the range gets further, depending on your focus."

She moved it around her hands, her head, and finally landed on her right palm.

"An Intermediate magic has to be able to flow through the blood, healing the sickness inside the bloodstream. We put this magic inside the blood and flow it around. All we have to focus was keeping it flowing in the blood, so that it can continue to heal the sickness inside."

Woah... So it's like a sickness destroying mini machine that goes on the blood stream. Yeah, that's a good description for it.

"I think I got the hint a little bit."

"Well, this one could take a long time to train. So take your time. I'm going to take some tea from the kitchen. Want some?"

"I prefer coffee."

"Then, coffee it is."

She took her glass to the stone chair at the bottom of the tree and left the park.

Now let's try to surprise her.

I only used one hand this time. I focused and created a ball. The pink ball of light appeared in my hand. Now, I focus on it so that it can be like a drone to move around.

I tried to imagine the ball moving in the air. But the ball just isn't moving.

"Hmm. This is a lot tougher than I thought."

I moved my fingers and tried different sides of the palm to shoot energy on, but the ball just didn't move.

Then I remembered what the nun was saying. The magic is flowing.

So, I stopped the ball of light. It dissipates in the air until it's really gone. I lifted my left hand and straightened both of my palms until it faced one another. Then, I focused my energy to create a line between my palms. And in the middle of that line, is the ball of light I made before.

Kuh, this is really difficult. The line can be seen, but when I tried making the ball, it disappeared. Keep going.

Finally, the line is there. While in the middle, the ball of light appears.

Okay. Now.

I slowly moved my right hand, creating the line much longer. And with my left hand, I pushed the ball.

And right. The ball moved following the line I created with my right hand.

Haha. But this is not enough.

Then I tried to make the line disconnected from my hand. The line cut off from my hand and started to make its own trajectory. Now all I need to do is simply create the line while pushing the ball to keep on moving. Just following the flow.

I even tried to make the line far from me. But it doesn't seem to be dissipating whatsoever. The furthest I can do depends on how far I can see. Then, a dumb idea came to me.

What if I tried making more than one ball?

I made another ball with my left hand, and connected it to the flow line. I did it again and again until there were 7 balls on me. But I got stopped by the voice of someone calling from the side.

"R-Rize?"

Khel came back along with the nun teacher. Khel was holding two cups while the nun was holding one. Their faces looked surprised, and I realized why. Then the lights dissipate.

"How… How are you able to control more than one ball?"

The nun teacher asked me after she put down her cup at the stone chair.

"I eh… simply make a new one and connect it."

"Connect it? Connect to what?"

So her method wasn't about using lines?

"Oh, erm… connect it to the flow?"

Khel looked at the nun teacher. But the nun teacher only gives back a confused look.

I drank my coffee. Bah, it's too sweet. What kind of people used too much sugar on a coffee?

"Just now… that healing magic… it was an Intermediate tier indeed."

Khel said after I finished my sip.

"But that level is nearly the same as a Knight tier, which is one level above it."

"Huh?"

The nun teacher looked at Khel.

"Khel, who is she?"

"She is an adventurer, Miss Jen."

"Hmm. Rize, what rank as an adventurer are you?"

"Emm, a Gray."

"Gray? How long have you been an adventurer?"

Khel switched to asking. I guess they really want to know?

"More than a month, already."

"Ah… I see."

"Rize. If you wish to learn magic any further, we couldn't really help you. But we do hope that by learning healing magic, it can help you increase your rank as an adventurer."

"Oh…"

So they can't teach me any further than intermediate. That's fine though. I only need it to heal wounds.

Plus, I don't think I need help in ranking up. I'm fine with how I am. I can rank up whenever I want to.

"I understand. But, when can I learn a higher tier healing magic?"

"Well, for one. The magic academy."

Ugh, that again.

"Oh… I see."

"Well I guess that finishes our training today. I hope you won't miss the healing act session on the 17th and 18th."

The three of us stood up. It's time to leave.

"I will. If I don't stuck in the middle of a jungle, that is."

"Right. As an adventurer, you sure do travel a lot. Okay, today's learning session is now over. You may come again if you feel like hanging out."

"Thanks, Miss Jen. Maybe if I have some time."

I left the park and headed out of the church. I looked to the sky and covered my eyes using my right hand.
