Chapter 40 - Alliance

The shattered remnants of Caer Tempest still echoed with the memories of the fierce battle between Corbin and Raxis, even after the Void storm had swallowed the Voidwalker. But just as Saskia, Kraven, and Skade were piecing together the remnants of their lives, a new player stepped into the game.

Amidst the ruins, a strange portal opened with a flash of light, and out stepped Dal'ynia, servant of the late Raxis. With a calm yet piercing gaze, she assessed the trio before offering an unexpected proposal. "Though my mistress Raxis may no longer be among us," Dal'ynia began, her voice cool and even, "her vision yet lives. And Corbin holds a key to its fulfillment." She paused, allowing her words to sink in. "The Etherheart, Corbin's possession, is none other than Raxis's Heart. With it, she can be revived. And your dear friend can be saved."

Kraven and Saskia exchanged a glance, surprise and skepticism warring in their expressions. "Let us be clear," Kraven interjected, his voice weighted with both exhaustion and suspicion. "This alliance benefits us both, yet Raxis sought our destruction. Why should we trust your word?"

Dal'ynia's smile widened ever so slightly, revealing a hint of fang. "Because, Voidwalker, if I deceive you, your chances of finding Corbin slip to near nil. And without the Etherheart, Raxis remains lost."

Skade's eyes narrowed. "We are not naïve, Etherkin."

"Very well." Dal'ynia inclined her head in a polite nod, unfazed by Skade's challenge. "Trust is earned, and I will show you my worth. First, know that Corbin lives. The Void has not consumed him, merely displaced him. Second, a location: the Val'Tharian Plains. This is where you shall begin your search."

Saskia's brows drew together. "How do you know this?" "The Etherkin are many things, but never underestimate our reach." Dal'ynia's voice held a note of pride. "For centuries, we have been a step ahead of your kind, watching, learning. And with Raxis, we sought to act. Now, that future is uncertain, but I have seen the storm. And the storm has seen Corbin."

Kraven rubbed his chin thoughtfully, his mind racing with implications. "If what you say is true…" he began, trailing off. "If what I say is true," Dal'ynia finished for him, her tone sharp as a knife's edge, "then you can find your friend, and I can find my mistress. All I ask in return is the Etherheart. And what would you give to have Corbin back?"

Saskia glanced sidelong at Kraven, a silent conversation passing between them. Finally, Kraven stepped forward, his jaw set in determination.

"We will find the Etherheart." "And when you do," Dal'ynia purred, "bring it to me. I will guide you to Corbin. But you must be warned: the Void is a realm of great power, and Corbin will have tasted that power. He may not be the man you once knew."

Skade scoffed. "I'll believe that when I see it. Corbin is strong-willed."

Dal'ynia smiled again, but it was a smile that sent a shiver down Skade's spine. "Perhaps. Or perhaps he has tasted the irresistible lure of true power, the kind that can change a man, warp his soul. Do not underestimate the corruption of the Void, child. It is a path that many have walked, and few have returned unscathed."

Kraven's expression grew grim, his thoughts racing with possibilities. But he knew that Skade was right—Corbin was strong-willed, and he would not have fallen prey to the Void without a fight.

"We will find him," he said again. "Then you will find him changed," Dal'ynia intoned, the air around her growing heavy with unseen magic. "The Etherheart will be his weakness. If you seek to bring him back, it must be destroyed. And for that, you will need my help."

Saskia's eyes widened, shock and horror chasing each other across her features. "Destroy the Etherheart? But that would mean…"

"That Raxis cannot return, yes," Dal'ynia finished. The air hung heavy with the weight of Dal'ynia's words. Kraven, Saskia, and Skade exchanged looks of stunned disbelief, the magnitude of what they were being asked to do sinking in.

Kraven spoke first, his voice low and grave. "You ask us to choose between our friend and your mistress."

Dal'ynia nodded, her eyes unblinking in the dim light. "Yes. For you, it is Corbin or the Etherheart. For me, it is Raxis or nothing." Skade bristled, his hand tightening on his weapon. "Then why should we trust you? Why should we believe that you will keep your word and guide us to Corbin?"

Dal'ynia's lips curved into a wry smile. "Because you have no other choice. The Etherkin hold the knowledge you need to reach the Void. Without us, you will be lost."

Kraven's jaw clenched, his gaze flinty. "And if we choose not to destroy the Etherheart? Dal'ynia's expression grew cold, her eyes flashing with ancient knowledge. "Then you doom Corbin to a fate worse than death. For without your destruction of the Etherheart, Raxis will find him. And she will use him as a vessel to return. Your friend will be no more."

Kraven and Saskia exchanged a long, heavy look, the weight of the decision pressing down on them like a mountain.

"And if we destroy the Etherheart?" Kraven asked finally. "Then you strip Raxis of her path to return. And you free Corbin from the Void's grasp."

Saskia shuddered, her face drawn and pale. "But will he be the same? Will he remember us?"

Dal'ynia shrugged, her shoulders ethereal and insubstantial. "That is unknown. The Void changes all it touches. But without the Etherheart, you at least give him a chance."

Kraven took a deep breath, his resolve hardening. "So be it," he said, his voice firm. "We will accept your alliance. We will find the Etherheart, and we will destroy it."

Dal'ynia inclined her head, a satisfied glint in her eyes. "Then we shall begin. And may the gods have mercy on us all."

The world shifted, the air around them shimmering as Dal'ynia's magic activated, and they disappeared into the swirling blackness. The trio emerged into a world unlike any they had known. Around them, the air swirled with a thick, viscous darkness, the ground shifting beneath their feet like liquid shadow.

"We have reached the Void," Dal'ynia whispered, her voice tinged with awe. "But be warned—this place is not kind to those who do not belong."

Kraven nodded, his eyes darting from side to side, looking for any sign of danger.

"We must find Corbin quickly," he said, his voice urgent. The trio began their search, following the trace of Corbin's presence that Dal'ynia's magic had detected. The Void was treacherous, its landscape treacherous and constantly shifting, and the sound of their footsteps echoed strangely in the oppressive silence.

As they ventured deeper into the darkness, they began to sense something following them, a presence that seemed to whisper in the shadows.

Saskia drew her weapon, her eyes darting back and forth. "What was that?" she whispered, her voice quavering slightly. The Void was a place of endless night, a world without light or air or warmth.

It was a place where the very fabric of reality seemed to twist and bend, where the laws of physics no longer held sway. The ground was unstable, shifting like a treacherous sand dune, and the air was thick and oppressive, pressing down on the trio like a physical weight.

The darkness seemed alive, swirling and pulsing with a terrible, primal energy. And all around them, the void whispered, a voice without words that filled their minds with primal terror.

"Keep your wits about you," Kraven murmured, his eyes narrowed against the endless blackness. "This place feeds on fear."

Dal'ynia nodded, her gaze fixed on the shadows. "Indeed. The Void is a creature in its own right, and it will consume you if you are not careful."

The trio pressed onward, the weight of the darkness pressing down on their shoulders like a physical burden. As they ventured deeper into the Void, they began to feel the darkness closing in around them. The whispers grew louder, pressing in on their minds, urging them to turn back, to abandon their quest.

But they pressed onward, their determination hardening in the face of the Void's malevolent presence.

Suddenly, Kraven halted, his eyes fixed on something in the distance.

"Do you see that?" he whispered.

Saskia and Skade followed his gaze, their hearts leaping into their throats. In the distance, a faint flicker of light shone through the darkness, a tiny beacon of hope in the endless night.

They stared at it, their gazes fixed on its radiance, the whispers of the Void receding for a moment.

"It's him," Skade whispered. "It must be Corbin."

Kraven nodded, his jaw set in determination.

"Then we must hurry," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Before the Void claims him." The trio began to move towards the flickering light, their steps quick and determined. The whispers of the Void grew louder, a chorus of malevolent voices urging them to turn back, to abandon their quest.

But they pressed onward, their eyes fixed on the flickering light that they knew to be Corbin.

And then, without warning, the light blinked out, vanishing into the darkness.

Kraven, Saskia, and Skade halted, their eyes darting back and forth, trying to make sense of what had just happened. "Where did he go?" Saskia whispered, her voice low and panicked. "He was there, I swear it."

"The Void is playing tricks on us," Skade hissed. "It's trying to break our resolve."

Kraven nodded, his face grim with determination. "We cannot let it win. Corbin is here, I know it. We must keep searching."

And so they pushed on, their eyes straining against the darkness, their senses heightened with anticipation. As they ventured deeper into the Void, the trio began to sense something different in the air, a faint, almost imperceptible change in the malevolent energy that swirled around them.

The whispers receded for a moment, replaced by a strange, eerie silence.

And then, from the darkness, a familiar voice spoke, clear and true as a bell.

"Help me," it whispered. "I am here."

Kraven, Saskia, and Skade froze, their eyes wide with shock and disbelief. "Corbin?" Kraven whispered, his voice tremulous with emotion. "Is that you?"

"I'm here," the voice replied, its tone growing stronger. "The Void is strong, but so am I."

The trio felt their hearts lift with hope, a fierce determination filling their veins.

"We're coming for you, Corbin," Saskia cried, her voice cutting through the darkness like a blade.

"Stay strong," Kraven called out. "We -

But before he could finish, the whispers returned, the Void's malevolent chorus drowning out Corbin's voice.

"Fools!" the whispers taunted. "He is lost to you, as you will soon be lost to yourselves."

The trio clenched their teeth, their eyes burning with defiance.

"No!" Skade snarled, her weapon raised. "We will find him, and we will destroy you!"

Kraven nodded, his face set in grim resolve. And so the trio pressed on, their spirits hardened by determination and their senses sharpened by the urgency of their quest. The whispers grew louder, taunting them, mocking them, trying to break their will.

"You are weak," they hissed. "You will never escape this place."

Kraven, Saskia, and Skade pressed on, ignoring the taunts of the Void. Their eyes searched the darkness, their ears strained for any hint of Corbin's voice. And then, just as they were about to give up hope, a flicker of light appeared in the distance, a tiny flame of hope in the all-consuming darkness.

The trio's hearts leapt in their chests, their steps quickening as they raced towards the light.

And there, in the flickering light, they saw him.

Corbin, battered and bruised, his eyes flickering with the telltale light of the Void.
