Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 – First day in a new world

Third person POV

The screen disappears, leaving him on his own. After that, Russell went back to his bus and began to think about his first trip and route. He knows that Hadrianwood is his first stop, but he is not familiar with the rest of the world.

So, he went back to his bus and sat in the driver's seat, which was placed on the left, like what it was in the Philippines back in his previous life. He knew that he needed to drive on the right side of the road if the driver's seat in his bus was placed like that.

And then, he looked at the basic controls of his vehicle: steering wheel, key slot, clutch, brakes, gas pedal, door button, and driving stick, among others. Then, the young bus driver began to familiarize with their mechanisms, remembering what his father back in his previous life would do as a bus driver. First, he looked at the key slot, which had the key shoved into it. So, Russell thinks whether he should turn it clockwise or counterclockwise. After some thinking, he chose the second option. It did the trick, and the bus's engine was turned on. As the bus's engine, so is the screen for the navigation system. It showed today's date: Kalaamau, 15 of Moparas. The weather was sunny and nice.

"Okay, good," Russell said to himself, before looking down under the dashboard, where the clutch, brakes, and gas pedal are, "which of those are the actual clutch, brakes, and gas pedal?"

So, in order to tell the difference, he pressed each of them at a time, listening to their sounds.

The gas pedal made a loud noise, so it was used to accelerate the bus.

The clutch was used for something else.

The brakes didn't make a noise, so it was used to stop the vehicle.

Now he told the difference between them, Russell said in his mind, "Keep those noises in mind."

Then, he looked at his bus's dashboard, which barely had any bells and whistles. It has no radio or anything to listen to the latest news of the hour and day. It only had 3 buttons, one of them for opening and closing the door, and a screen for navigation. The dashboard also had gauges for the bus's speed and other aspects that are adjustable depending on its current state, as well as some screens showing the arrows for the back and front lights. The dashboard also had a brown, thick-cloth-made knapsack and a metal box with a lock and its key on it as well.

So, Russell opened the said button, opening the door, and then, he pressed it again, closing the door. After that, the young bus driver tried the other features like a lever to wipe the windshield with wipers so he would be familiar with them in the future.

But then, Russell saw the new names for the day and month and was stunned at those new names, thinking that those are the names for the days and months in this world. So, before driving towards Hadrianwood, Russell checked out the screen's built-in calendar to see the new names of them. After that, he was ready to go on a journey in this world, shifting his gear to Drive and leaving the area towards the inner, urban area of Hadrianwood. There he parked his bus in a secluded area where no one would see it, before getting off and began walking the streets to explore first. As he walks, many of the villagers look at him with curious eyes because of his strange attire. When Russell saw that, he became a bit uneasy and nervous. "Oh no…" he thought to himself.

He then imagined in his mind a scenario where those around him, regardless of social class, would look at him and his strange attire. In there, an aristocratic couple, with the wife who had a 2-feet powdered wig in the color pink, marveled at his attire's modest, yet elegant looks. Some of the commoners were amazed at his attire's niceness and neatness. This caused Russell to be nervous.

But after that imaginary scenario, Russell managed to snap out and continued walking despite the anxiety, before reaching a small bookstore somewhere. Looking at the medieval-style look of the exterior of the shop from the outside, he wonders if he can buy a map and an encyclopedia of this world. Testing that hypothesis, he enters in, causing a small bell on top of the door to move and caused to ring. Once he was inside, he began to browse the aisles for a map and an encyclopedia. The shelves contain books and maps of different kinds and topics. After an eternity of searching and finding, he finally found two that matched his needs. One was titled, "The Encyclopedia of the World", and the other had a title called, "The World Map". He then took a look at each of them, seeing all the useful information he would need in his trips and journeys in this world. He learns that he was, indeed, in the Kingdom of the Southern Plains, and the capital of it is Rossley, a big, trading city.

 "Woah…" he commented.

He then folded the map neatly and carefully and closed the book, before deciding to buy them.

So, he reaches into the pockets of his pants and suit for any money to pay for them, only to find a leather wallet in his blue suit.

Curious but hoping he could find some money, he opened it.

Then, he found 30 gold coins in it.

Now thinking that he could finally pay for them, he closed the wallet, grabbed the book and map, and went up to the counter to pay for them. There he puts the map and book so the cashier, a young girl with blond hair and blue eyes, would check their prices.

"I'll buy these, please," Russell said to her nicely and politely.

"Oh, okay," the cashier responded, before checking their price tags.

She then calculated the total price on a paper notepad with a pencil.

"That'll be 11 gold coins, please," she said to him.

"Oh, okay," Russell replied, before opening his wallet once more to get some gold coins.

He then gave the 11 gold coins to the cashier. "Here."

The cashier accepted it and gave the book and map to him. "Come again."

She said that with a quick bow.

"Thank you," Russell responded with gratitude as he received what he had needed.

He then shoved his wallet into his suit pocket and left the shop with his newly purchased book and map as the cashier waved goodbye nicely.

Luckily, the girl at the shop didn't suspect a thing, and Russell was relieved by that.

Once outside once more, he was hungry, so he decided to grab a quick food to eat. He found a small food shop that sells meat pies and pretzels and went there to buy some food for himself. There he buys a slice of meat pie and 1 big pretzel for 7 gold coins total. After that, he went to his bus to eat his simple lunch. He ate and ate until he only had a small piece of the slice of meat pie and half of the pretzel left. He decided to save them for later.

After that, he looked at his wallet, which only had 12 gold coins left. "Now I need to earn money by driving passengers with my bus…" he thought to himself in resolution. So, he opened the book and began to read about the world, starting off with the Kingdom of the Southern Plains, the kingdom he was in. He also cross-refers some of the places he comes across in the book with the world map. This lasted for an hour. At that time, he decided to venture on his first route to a town called Tanner Town, which was 2 hours away from Hadrianwood in the east. But before that, he gets some pieces of vintage paper for 1 gold coin for a pack of 10, plus 2 free, sharpened pencils, so he could write down the destinations he will be taking his potential passengers to. And then, he wrote the names of his potential destinations on those pieces of paper, with each bearing the name of one place.

And finally, at 2 p.m., he put up the sign that says Tanner Town in the front of his bus behind the windshield so anyone would see it and so, they might be interested in his services. After that, he sat down in his driver's seat to wait for anyone to ride his bus, and he passes the time by fidgeting and reading his book.
