Chapter 1 - Echoes of a forgotten oath

Drones flying through the air, searching for any movement outside of the trenches to strike. Surface to air missile systems, shooting down said drones illuminating the dark night sky. The roaring sound of artillery echoed through the air, it was mixed with the screams of young men crying for their mothers.

"Gabriel, we have another patient incoming!"

Today marked the 6th year of the great third world war. The world had been turned upside down in the matter of years. Gabriel a young doctor in his early thirties had spent 5 years grueling years in the trenches tending to the wounded.

The boys just become younger and younger. They're really scraping the barrel at this point.

Of course the war was meaningless. Powerful people wanted more power. A dispute between dictators of large countries. History repeating itself over and over again. Only this time the weapons were that much deadlier.

"Gabriel! Stop spacing out for gods sake you have patients to take care of."

For gods sake? Are there even gods in this world? If so they must have left a long time ago.

"A high impact force injury caused by the blast wave, and shrapnel of an artillery shell. Initial assessment reveals potential rib fractures and penetrating chest trauma. Extensive soft tissue damage, and possible organ perforations in the abdominal area. Immediate concern for hemorrhagic shock due to visible and suspected internal bleeding".

The extent of the trauma went on, but Gabriel had long stopped listening and just spaced out, looking at the mutilated body of the teen soldier. Yes, a body, although living and screaming, there was nothing that could be done

"Gabriel, stop spacing out!"'

I'm so fucking tired of dealing with all this bullshit. Why is the world so cruel? Why did I even become a doctor in the first place.

So much meaningless death and so much suffering. Becoming a doctor had always been a childhood dream. To help others in their darkest times.

Was this it? Was this what I had been working so hard to achieve, being admitted to a prestigious university and going through the hardships of medical school?

As a doctor, Gabriel was regarded as a hero and a beacon of light in the darkness. But no one really considered what mental strain this would put on a person. The world was ending, as humanity no longer had the means to produce any food, due to the widespread destruction, primarily caused by nuclear weapons. Yet the fighting was still going on.

The world is truly evil. Humanity is truly evil.

"What the fuck Gabriel? Have you stopped trying? The boy is dead. 14 years old and you did nothing."

All of my colleagues are dead. I don't recognize the face of anyone here. Everyone is evil. So fucking evil. They want to hurt me.

The male nurse kept talking but Gabriel just stared at his face. At first it looked normal but it started warping. Looking like the face of a great devil.

Yes this is what humanity was. Evil. Humanity deserved everything that was coming their way. For it was in human nature to be evil. Even everyone in this room is evil and deserve to die.

Gabriel grabbed the sharp surgical scalpel. With a precise yet forceful motion, he inserted the scalpel into the carotid triangle of the male nurse's neck.

Fucking bastard yelling at me like that. I guess I too am evil. Everyone is looking at me. What did they expect.

Shellshocked and psychotic from the severe trauma endured over the years. Gabriel went on a rampage inside the medical war tent until several bullets pierced his chest.

This is the end of me.

The faint echoes of a doctor's oath resounded in his head:

"I will practice medicine with integrity, humility, honesty, and compassion - working with my fellow doctors and other colleagues to meet the needs of my patients. I shall never intentionally do or administer anything to the overall harm of my patients."

What a load of bullshit, all of it. All this sacrifice, dedicating my life to do good for humanity and to save lives, for nothing.'

Everything turned dark, and the vision of the chaotic medical tent began to vanish.
