Chereads / The CEO's Hired Girlfriend / Chapter 25 - Cruel Joke

Chapter 25 - Cruel Joke

Fiona woke up with a spring in her step, feeling a sense of excitement and anticipation that Monday morning. She had even woken up earlier than she usually did because of her overexcitement.

It was the first day of her new job at PK Enterprise, and she was determined to make a great impression. She thought with a happy smile as she got out of bed to freshen up.

Once she finished freshening up, she got dressed in her best professional attire and headed out the door.

She was dressed in a white silk blouse, navy blue tailored trousers, and black moderate-heel. Fiona let her hair down, giving her an air of confidence.

Fiona flagged down a cab, and in a few minutes, she arrived at the company building which was now her new place of work.

A smile of satisfaction played on her lips. She could already feel that this job was the start of something good.

As she walked into the lobby and took the elevator to the top floor, Fiona's heart raced with anticipation.

When she got to her desk which was just at the side of the CEO's office entrance, she smiled upon seeing Paul.

"Hi! I'm Fiona Lopez, the new personal assistant," she introduced and Paul nodded.

He wasn't scared of losing his job since he already knew his job descriptions and the personal assistant's.

"You're welcome. Here is a list of what the CEO likes and doesn't. In that list is also his lunch break and what he likes to eat. There's also a list of all the directors and everything you need to know about the company and the CEO to make your job easier," Paul said, handing her a file and Fiona took it.

"Thank you. I'll go through them," she said and Paul nodded.

"Your desk is over there. I already left his coffee in his office," Paul said and Fiona nodded before going to the desk assigned to her and started going through the file.

Liam, who usually took his private elevator decided to take the public elevator and when Fiona saw him approaching, her heart skipped.

What was he doing there? How could she run into someone she didn't want to see on her first day at work? When she arrived, she had thought the day held something beautiful but now, seeing Liam had spoiled whatever beautiful moment she had grasped.

"Hello, sir, how may I help you? The CEO is not on...." she let the rest of her words trail off when he simply walked past her into the CEO's office, a friend etching her face.

What was going on? She mused and decided to go see what he was doing there even though she would rather not. She had to know if he was a business partner or something.

And why did he ignore her the way he did as though they were complete strangers? Yes, she wanted to stay away from him but getting that cold treatment from him seemed to hurt her ego. She thought as she stepped into the office to see him walking to the CEO's desk which was sitting pretty vacant in the expansive office.

Fiona's eyes widened in shock, her mind racing with thoughts as she watched him go take his seat behind the desk.

What was he doing here? He couldn't be her boss or was he? How did he end up as her boss? Why was fate playing a cruel joke on her? Just how can her one-night stand be her boss, overnight? To think he was the last man she wanted to be close to or work for.

Liam looked up at her, a hint of a smile playing on his lips as he watched various emotions flicker on her face.

"What's my schedule for the day? Any meetings? Or is there somewhere I need to be?" he said and Fiona shook her head as she met his gaze for the first time.

Flashes of Saturday night and how he had told her manager about her 'excellent acting skills' and the fact that she was ashamed of sleeping with him when she had said she would flood her head.

Fiona's face flushed with embarrassment as she tried to process the situation. There was no way she could work for this man. Especially not after playing fake girlfriend for him and going to see his mom.

"I'm sorry... sir but I can't work here," Fiona choked out and Liam cocked a brow.

"You can't? Why? Scared I might want something more? Not to worry. I don't mix business with pleasure... except of course you're in my house for a non-official visit," Liam said, an amused smile playing on his lips.

Fiona's eyes narrowed, her anger rising as she realized Liam was enjoying her discomfort. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

She had caused this but why couldn't he act like an adult and let the events of that night be? This was the exact reason she wasn't going to work there. Never.

Liam's face straightened. His expression is unreadable. "Enjoying what?" he asked, pretending not to know what she meant and Fiona scoffed, her hands clenching into fists.

"I said I quit. I believe I don't need a reason to not want to work here," she said firmly and Liam leaned back in his chair, his expression unwavering.

"You're not going to let a little awkwardness drive you away from a job as prestigious as this, are you? You sounded happy about working here," he said and Fiona narrowed her eyes in suspicion.

"You eavesdropped on me?" she said and Liam shook his head, taking pleasure in her misery.

"I won't call it eavesdropping. It's my house and my room, remember?" he asked and Fiona shook her head. She couldn't take this. If she stayed there a little more, she might just murder him and she didn't want that.

Fiona's anger boiled over, and she slammed her hands on the desk. "I can get a job elsewhere, the same way I got this one so, you can go ahead to hire someone else," she said and turned to leave.

Liam shrugged, his voice nonchalant. "Suit yourself, Fiona. But know this. I'll be waiting for you to come back. And when you do, we'll pick up right where we left off," he said and Fiona shook her head and turned to him.

"Never..... "

"There you go again," he cut in and Fiona smiled, a stark contrast to the anger inside of her.

Without saying a word to him, she turned on her heel, storming out of the office. She could feel Liam's gaze following her, but she didn't bother to spare him another glance.

As she left the building, Fiona felt a sense of relief wash over her. She had stood up for herself, and she had refused to be bullied by Liam's games and she hoped he would stop there.
