Cora sat beside Derek's bedside in the hospital, clutching his uninjured arm. The steady beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound breaking the silence and reassuring her that Derek was still alive.
She stared at his face, willing him to wake up. The doctor had administered a sedative to help with the pain, but knowing that didn't ease her worry. She wanted to see him awake, to have him chide her and act so nonchalant around her.
Cora sniffled as she looked down at Derek's sleeping form. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying, and she couldn't help but replay the events that had led to this moment.
The door to the room opened quietly, snapping her out of her reverie and Liam stepped in.
He took in the scene before him and his heart broke. Cora, disheveled and distraught, holding Derek's hand as if her touch alone could pull him back to consciousness.
He approached the bed, his expression a mix of concern and worry.
