The guards outside were caught unaware, not because of the sudden attacks [as they were already informed that something was happening in that cave section] but because when the escapees had come out, the guards attempted to talk to them, trying to let them know what was really going on as the higher-ups (Sir X), had said the test was over, as them escaping was an unseen event.
