Chapter 13 - The Lament of Comet Chadwick

The Lament of Comet Chadwick

"Your clicks can be set free," The preacher said as he stood on a box in the heart of New York, "the father will return, but only the clickless will be saved."

Comet watched the man for a few minutes, chewing his gum slowly as the world swirled around his vision. The drugs offered his eyes colors beyond their wildest dreams! The movements of rainbow brought him to the preacher this day. What would it be like? To not have a click? He envied people without them.

"Mr. Comet, excuse me," The child's voice cut through his hallucinations, glancing down at the small girl she held up a comic book and a pen. He recognized the art style and felt a wave of grief.

"Will you sign my comic book?"

Comet almost didn't hear her, his mind racing back to memories he wished he could get rid of.

"Yeah, sure kid." He leaned down and picked up the pen, racing the tip over the colorful pictures.

"Now whose name am I pulling in this thing, huh, slugger? Is it for a princess? You's gotta be a princess, right?" He asked with a bright smile, willing the high away for just a moment.

"No," She laughed, "My names Suzie!"

"Suzie? Now that's an unusual name," He chuckled anxiously, "How's you spellin' that, Suz?"

She spelled out her name, and he quickly wrote her a brief message before handing it back, Suzie waved goodbye and hopped off with her mom. Comet rolled his fingers through his shaved hair and stopped at the giant scar on his head.

"Suzie, huh?" Comet murmured, glancing at the pastor.

"I reject my click name!" The pastor continued, "My name is Chris, no longer do I hold the sinful name of Crimson! Join me, Clicks are a curse. We have a cure and his names Jesus!"

Comet looked down at my hands and back up to the pastor, maybe he was right about something, Comet hated his click. It took everything from me. Maybe being cured would be better? Maybe the pastor isn't so crazy after all?
