Madeline shifted on the couch, her eyes still shut, but something seemed to make her stir, an uncomfortable feeling nagging in her chest. She shifted again when it came nagging, causing a deep frown to appear on her face, and lines to form on her forehead. Suddenly, she found herself in a great mist, the road edged with stone. Her vision was blurred, making it hard to see beyond the mist.
"Where am I?" she whispered, her eyes squinting as she tried to discern what lay in front of her or where she might have traveled to.
How had she ended up here, she wondered, for all she could remember was the fireplace and the sofa on which she had sat and slept. She had never imagined she would be transported to a different place. It was not as if she usually sleepwalk or something.
Her eyes traveled down to her feet, and a quick surge of breath escaped her lips when she saw that she was barefoot and wearing only undergarments, without her corset and bodice.
