The birds chirped excitedly outside the wide-opened window. Madeline's gaze was fixed on them, entertained by their colorful feathers and songs. She knew it was only a matter of seconds before she would meet with the king. She had difficulty sleeping last night, worried about what he must be thinking of her.
As the maidens worked on her hair and dress, Madeline noticed how quiet they were, it was unlike their usual gossiping selves. She could see them stealing glances through the mirror, and she was certain they had heard the rumors and were silently judging her. Even Eloide, usually talkative, was suddenly quiet.
After the other maidens left, Eloide remained, staring at Madeline through the mirror. "The king has asked that I come with you so that you have a maiden you are more comfortable with than the ones you will meet there," she explained.
Madeline nodded, feeling grateful that Eloide would accompany her.
"How are you?" Eloide whispered.
