Chapter 3 - Waltz of the Eminence in Pajamas

The royal ball was a whirlwind of silk, whispered intrigues, and Ravi Sharma doing his absolute best to blend into the background. Technically, the invitation addressed to 'Absolute' had no connection to his actual identity. Yet, with the kingdom on high alert due to the mysterious 'Cult of Diablos', blending in was proving difficult. The nobles attending eyed him with a mix of amusement and thinly veiled suspicion. It didn't help that he'd stubbornly refused to change out of his Academy pajamas, claiming a sudden, inexplicable fondness for the fabric."My dear Lord Sharma," a simpering duchess accosted him, "I simply must commend you on your unique attire! Such a daring statement!"Ravi blinked. "Um, thank you?" Before she could delve into a lengthy analysis of his sartorial revolution, he slipped away. His grand plan was to observe. Who held true power in the kingdom? Who were the players worth infiltrating? Who had the best snacks? The latter was, surprisingly, proving to be the easiest goal to achieve."Ravi? What on earth are you doing?" His brother, Aryan, appeared by his side, a frown marring his handsome features. "You're embarrassing the family name!""Nonsense, brother!" He swept crumbs from his pajamas with practiced nonchalance. "I am merely cultivating an air of eccentricity. It is all part of the plan."Aryan sighed. Ever since the academy, Ravi's 'plans' have grown increasingly incomprehensible. The ballroom doors burst open, the King and Queen entering amidst fanfare. Ravi felt a ripple pass through the room—a shift in power dynamics as eyes turned towards the royal couple. Now, this was interesting. Then the most peculiar thing happened. One of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting, a woman with sharp eyes and a severe bun, locked eyes with him. A silent exchange seemed to pass between them, her gaze narrowing in what felt alarmingly like recognition.A moment later, the lady-in-waiting was by his side, bowing deeply. "Lord Absolute," she murmured in a voice meant for his ears alone. "Her Majesty requests your presence."Ravi barely suppressed a gasp. The plan was working! Well, sort of. He wasn't quite ready for the Eternal Moon to come this far out of the shadows, but one couldn't deny a queen. With a theatrical sigh, he followed. The Queen's private chambers were far more intimate than the grand ballroom. She perched on a chaise lounge, the lady-in-waiting hovering at her side. There was tension in the air, a calculating glint in the Queen's eyes that made Ravi's pulse quicken."Lord Absolute," the Queen began, her voice cool and measured. "We find ourselves in a troubling predicament. The Cult of Diablos, these shadowy figures, threaten the stability of our kingdom."Ravi nodded sagely, inwardly marveling at how the situation had escalated so delightfully."And," the Queen continued, fixing him with an intense gaze, "it seems you might be uniquely connected to this threat."He blinked. Wait… what?"Your wisdom, Absolute," the lady-in-waiting interjected, "the prophecies you uttered at the academy..."Prophecies? A bead of sweat trickled down Ravi's back. Had he been even more unhinged with his nocturnal ramblings than he remembered?"Therefore," the Queen concluded, rising with a dramatic flourish, "we have decided to offer you a position of the highest importance. As Grand Advisor, your knowledge of the cult will prove invaluable."Ravi's mind raced. This wasn't part of the plan at all! Responsibility? Actual involvement in politics? The absurdity of it all made him want to laugh—or perhaps scream. Somehow, he managed an expression of profound gravity."Your Majesty, to serve is... an unexpected honor," he stammered, buying time. The ball was forgotten. The rest of the evening was a flurry of whispered meetings, covert instructions, and Ravi getting alarmingly familiar with the inner workings of the royal court. As he was escorted back to his dorm room, head spinning, a single thought echoed in his mind: I'm way over my head. And yet, there was an exhilaration in the chaos. He was no longer playing at power; the stakes were real, even if he hadn't a clue what he was actually doing. Perhaps it didn't matter. His world had gone topsy-turvy, with the line between his delusions and reality blurring in spectacular fashion. One thing was for certain: Ravi Sharma, reluctant Grand Advisor and accidental leader of a possibly real shadow organization, was having the time of his life.
