Chapter 39 - Researching

They wanted to create a spell through which a wizard could portray his thoughts to another person while having no need to be skilled at Legimency and Occlumency, as required for this kind of communication. But it was supposed solely on a biological and physical level.

"It seems we should search for a spell which is similar or somewhat overlapping with our idea. Maybe the Disarming spell. It sends a preset signal to the brain, making a person drop or throw away things. Then, we would need to create a spell that could continuously send signals that are interpreted as thoughts or sounds. I think we should split up and search for a few useful books and ideas.", Johannes proposed.

"If it is fine by you, I'd like to have a look at sound and in what way the brain interprets it. I think I know a fitting professor to help me with that.", Sabine said shily, but everyone just nodded, except Theo, who said he wanted to go with her and think about ideas to translate to sound to magic.

"Good. With you two, we should be able to create a fitting system to create specific sounds. Now we just need to develop the base of the spell, in which we can implement these specified magical signals. Some spells can already be fired continuously, but that isn't a normal feature but is done by wizards under pressure. Maybe we should start with analysing a few fitting spells about sending a basic signal to another person.", Sebastian said and proposed an idea for the teams.

"How about I work with Johannes? Both of us seem to be the most knowledgeable in either spells and their properties, or warding, which would surely be helpful. Then, Andreas, you and Nadine could look for more ways to make a spell continuous, and you could also look into the aspect of encrypting spells, or at least the sent signal, so it cannot be intercepted and read. If it were to be used to relay commands on a battlefield, we do not want the enemy to know our tactics."

The others agreed, while Johannes seemed in thought, before adding, "Yeah, you are correct. I seem to remember reading about a ward that tracks incoming magic spells and their content. It is weak against elements, as most magic is transformed into matter or another energy. Seriously, I still do not understand why those War Wizards used mostly pure elemental spells, instead of 'spell' spells, like stupefy or bombarda, if you understand what I mean."

Andreas nodded and added his thoughts, "Well, I do not know, but maybe it is hard to create such high-level spell spells. But I understand your point, the spells would lose some of their energy when they affect a large area or aren't mostly in the form of magic, but elements or other types of energy. And they would be hard to control, as they aren't completely made from magic. Maybe we could ask our professors about this, but for now, we should focus on our tasks.", he finished and walked away while taking Nadine with him, effectively ending the conversation.

[A/N: That is a problem I realised in HP. Most strong spells are just big transfigurations or fires, not spells like Stupefy, ...; therefore, these two fights were meant to show this problem. They are also too destructive towards the surroundings. Do you have any suggestions? I have a few solid changes/solutions, which will be implemented later, but they aren't unchangeable.]

After the others were gone, Sebastian and Johannes began looking for a few books on their topic and sat down next to each other, reading while sometimes conversing about their findings.

Spell structures were mostly written down as mathematical equations or intents and the way they are connected and structured on top of each other. But for beginners, the easiest way to calculate and build spells was using calculations, matrixes, and vectors.

Luckily, researchers found out about muggle computers, copying the ideas and structures behind them, to create specialised alchemical tools which could help in calculating, with integrated different equations, constants, different fields of maths and even graphical projection of vectors, graphs and more.

Although it isn't always a hundred per cent correct, it can help by calculating the best possible numbers, at least from a theoretical standpoint. But that just made it easier, not easy. It was like giving a university student a calculator. Instead of spending several hours performing calculations, it is faster, but the theoretical work is still there, maybe even becoming harder.

"Look here, I think we should be able to use this spell matrix for the base. It creates a colourless, continued beam, sending one 'signal', which here is creating a blue dot. Theoretically, it could be used to create a constant expeliarmus, as things like stupefy, bombarda, and most others are too complex, while expeliarmus just sends a bio-electrical pulse into the body from the point of impact. The rest happens inside the body, automatically. But there are problems when trying to cast the spell. In reality, it does not work, as it somehow conflicts with the invisible property. I wonder how I do it.", Sebastian said, showing Johannes a structure consisting of lots of numbers, circles, squares, and other geometrical forms, sometimes even runes.

"That's good!", Johannes exclaimed and shared his theory, based on something he just read, "I think it is because this spell is too complex to be sent out without light. And from what I understand, you just make the light invisible. Other spells just do not need light to be supported, while others are a mix of magic, imbued with elements. Like this spell Sectumsempra, we learned about. The one this British Elite Hit Wizard, Severus Snape, created. In one of his seminars he shared, that the spell sends out a sharp wave of high-pressure wind, whose edge carries the magic forward which in turn makes the edge stay in shape. An incredible piece of work."

"Right, that could be. Maybe, we could find a way to make our spell be carried by sound. But it could be too hard for us to pull off. Maybe we should make it very thin and slim, a continued beam of light. Like that, the power would be weaker, but we do not need that, right? And like that, it could be easier to control. The only downside is that others could see that we communicate.", Sebastian shared his thoughts and contemplations.

"Okay, then we will start with that. I think I know at which part of the base we would have to modify the spell to do just that. The hard part would be to keep this change while working the rest of the spell inside the matrix. But maybe the others can show us some other spells that use modifiers and bio-electrical signals. Then we could just kind of copy and implement it.", Johannes said.

Both boys, motivated by their success for far, went back to reading and taking notes until a loud, and dire, female voice echoed throughout the castle: "Every student is to come to the Great Hall immediately!"

A few minutes later, all students found themselves seated in the Great Hall, turned to a small podium at the front. Behind the podium stood the German Minister of Magic, an unhappy look on his face. He stood together with the current Headmistress and behind them were several wizards, wearing black battle robes and fitting, black dragonhide armour which depicted the sigil of the German Ministry of Magic, as well as their rank and profession. Every single one of them was a Hit Wizard, working for the ministry as G.S.F.F., German Special Fighting Forces meant to protect, attack, assassinate, and find people. Kind of like the SEALs at MACUSA, who were famous for destroying wizarding drug clans and cartels in North and South America.

The German Minister of Magic, Adelbert Neubauer, came to the front and cast a silent and wandless sonorous on himself with a wave of his hand, and began addressing the students.

"Dear students. Today, I am here to share some pressing and unpleasant news with you. To start, we need to have a look at the muggles. Two cities were destroyed in minutes each, and as you can guess, they aren't happy. While the civilians speculate that there are aliens, fighting against special forces on our planet, the governments threaten us with their bombs and weapons. Though they cannot find us, they could still destroy large patches of land, hoping for a lucky hit.", the minister of magic started, while everyone's expressions became grave and some paled.

"Some governments even went as far as threatening the families of muggle-born wizards and squibs, residing in muggle regions. A few even got killed by hasty governments. As an act of revenge, war broke out in some underdeveloped countries, that thought themselves superior, and while muggles can't eradicate us without the use of large-scale weapons, they can still kill a few of us. As it turns out, they have a few wizards which they raised as loyal soldiers and they are currently deploying them, although they are a bit below us in terms of strength and spells."

Now, every student paled. Hidden wizards?
