Matthew stared at his phone, seeing Lauren's number flashing on the screen. He didn't want to pick it up; he didn't want to hear her voice and have second thoughts.
What Lauren had done to him a year ago had almost destroyed him and his family. She had committed the most lowly acts any woman on earth could think of, just like the villains in those soap operas.
After calling twice and him not picking up, she texted him, "Pick it up; I'm not going to do anything, I promise."
She called again, and Matthew contemplated for a while before finally deciding to just go with it and answer the phone. "Hello."
"Hi, Matthew, you sound great." Matthew could almost see Lauren's smile through her voice.
There was no poison in her tone, no grudge, no usual sarcasm. "Thanks, you sound... happy."
