Michael had come over for dinner the previous night and had asked her to go with him to his city villa for the weekend. She had agreed. They were set to leave at sundown that Friday, so she decided to wait in his apartment while he worked. She sat opposite him as he worked at the dining room table. He was on a conference call.
At first, she had watched him with interest—the way his hair was slicked back against his face and how his eyes were glued to the screen of his laptop. When he occasionally glanced at her, she noticed the smile in his eyes that wasn't reflected on the rest of his face. She loved the way the last orange rays of the sun highlighted the bone structure of his face. He would make a sculptor proud if they managed to capture all those angles correctly. When she grew bored, she switched to reading a book while listening to music through her wireless earbuds.
