Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: Whispers of Prophecy

The morning air was brisk as Han Yuling and Xiao Wei made their way to the secluded library where Lin Fei spent most of her days surrounded by dusty tomes and ancient scrolls. The library, a sprawling edifice of stone and wood, was quiet except for the occasional rustle of parchment or the soft thud of a book being placed on a table.

Lin Fei looked up from her desk, cluttered with manuscripts and texts, as they approached. Her eyes, always sharp and curious, flashed with interest. "Yuling, Wei, this is an unexpected pleasure," she greeted, pushing aside a stack of books to make space. "What brings you to my sanctuary?"

"We need your insight, Fei," Xiao Wei began, getting straight to the point. "There's a prophecy we uncovered in the archives last night. It speaks of a Shadow Walker who will rise when the Order is on the brink of destruction. We think Master Liang might believe he is this figure."

Lin Fei's expression grew solemn as she listened, her fingers absently tracing the spines of the books nearest her. "The Shadow Walker prophecy... yes, I've encountered references in several obscure texts. It's said that this figure will either save the Order or doom it completely, depending on the path they choose."

Han Yuling leaned forward, her tone urgent. "Do you think there's truth to this prophecy, Fei? Could Liang be misinterpreting it?"

"It's possible," Lin Fei replied, pulling a heavy book from a nearby shelf. "Prophecies are notoriously cryptic. They can easily be twisted to fit one's narrative. Let's see what the texts say." She flipped through the pages until she found the section she was looking for, her finger tracing the ancient script.

"As the shadows lengthen, so too will rise a walker of the dark, born of chaos, bringer of change. He who walks at twilight, both destroyer and savior, the fate of the Order in his hands," Lin Fei read aloud, her voice echoing slightly in the quiet room.

Xiao Wei exchanged a glance with Han Yuling. "That could describe any number of scenarios or individuals. It's vague enough to suit Liang's ambitions."

"Yes, and there's more," Lin Fei said, turning the page. "'Beware the bearer of the false light, for he shall lead many astray under the guise of renewal.' This could very well refer to someone like Liang, who promises reform but harbors darker intentions."

"We need to make the others see that Liang could be this 'bearer of false light' and not the prophesized savior he claims to be," Han Yuling said firmly.

Lin Fei nodded, closing the book with a thud. "I will help you gather all relevant information and interpretations of this prophecy. We must present a compelling case at the Conclave."

With Lin Fei's expertise, they spent the rest of the day poring over ancient prophecies and historical records, each piece of evidence strengthening their resolve to expose Master Liang's deception.

As evening approached and the library's shadows lengthened, the trio felt a mix of anticipation and dread. They were piecing together a dangerous puzzle, one that could either save their beloved Order or see it fall into ruin. The following steps they took would need to be precise and calculated, for the eyes of friend and foe alike were upon them.

The great hall, usually a place of quiet reflection and solemn rituals, was today buzzing with the intense energy of the upcoming Conclave. Elders and disciples murmured in small clusters, casting occasional wary glances towards the elevated platform where the leaders would soon convene.

As Han Yuling, Xiao Wei, and Lin Fei entered, a hush fell over some sections of the crowd. Their recent discoveries had not gone unnoticed, and their alliance was a topic of both wary respect and suspicion among their peers.

"The Council is already assembling," Lin Fei whispered, her gaze fixed on the figures taking their seats. "We need to be ready to present everything concisely and convincingly."

Xiao Wei nodded, adjusting the scrolls in his arms. "I'll start with the prophecy's origins and discrepancies in interpretation. Yuling, you'll follow with the recent events under Master Liang's command that correspond suspiciously with the darker interpretations of the prophecy."

"And I will conclude with alternate readings and historical outcomes of similar prophecies to illustrate the dangers of a single, self-serving interpretation," Lin Fei added, her voice steady but her nerves evident in her tight grip on her stack of books.

As they made their final preparations, the room's atmosphere grew tense. The elders' faces were stoic, betraying little of their thoughts as Master Liang himself walked to the center of the platform, exuding confidence. His eyes briefly met Han Yuling's, and his smirk was fleeting but challenging.

Elder Jian, the head of the council, called the room to order with a loud, resonant voice. "We are gathered today to discuss urgent matters regarding the future of our Order and the potential fulfillment of the Shadow Walker prophecy. We shall hear first from Master Liang, followed by counterpoints from other members."

Master Liang stepped forward, his voice echoing through the hall. "Esteemed colleagues, we stand at a precipice. The ancient texts speak of a Shadow Walker, a leader who will guide our Order through darkness into a new era. I believe that with our challenges, I can be that leader, guiding us with strength and new vision."

Murmurs of agreement and dissent fluttered through the hall. When he finished, the attention shifted to Xiao Wei, who began with a firm voice. "While the prophecy does speak of a leader, it is imperative to consider the dual nature of the Shadow Walker. Our research has uncovered that this figure could also lead us into ruin if misinterpreted or misused."

As Xiao Wei presented his evidence, Lin Fei and Han Yuling prepared to support him with detailed accounts and historical parallels. The crowd listened, rapt and increasingly unsettled, as the trio laid bare the potential dangers of unthinkingly following a prophecy.

When it was her turn, Han Yuling spoke passionately, "We must consider the risks of declaring one person as the Shadow Walker. Recent actions taken under Master Liang's orders have led to divisions and conflicts that mirror the darker paths foretold by the prophecy."

Lin Fei closed their presentation, her tone scholarly yet urgent. "History teaches us that prophecy can be a guide, but it can also be a weapon. We urge the council to consider all perspectives before making a decision that could irrevocably shape our future."

The room was silent for a long moment after they concluded. Elder Jian nodded slowly, his expression unreadable. "We will now deliberate on these points. The destiny of our Order must be handled with the utmost care."

As the council members retreated for private discussion, the tension in the room lingered, thick and palpable. Han Yuling, Xiao Wei, and Lin Fei exchanged glances, their shared resolve mingling with the uncertainty of the outcome. They had spoken truth to power, but the final decision was out of their hands. Now, they could only wait.
