Angered by the fact that I'd just been turned down by Sylvie, I recklessly stormed out of the work building, my fists clenched, and my thoughts running wild with curses as I walked out. it wasn't time for my break, nor was the time anywhere near closing hours, however none of it mattered to me. there was no way i could work in these mental conditions, it would only make things worse for me and the company.
I got into my car and drove to the closest cafe to cool off. I had thrown on a pair of shades and a face cap before alighting from the vehicle just to avoid attention from the public. The last thing I wanted right now was a bunch of strangers crowding up against me for pictures and autographs. one single outburst, and I could lose my entire career.
I walked into the cafe and breathed a sigh of relief at how empty it was. Only three customers were in the store, and all of them seemed to be minding their business and drinking their coffee.
"Is there something you want sir?" the waitress asked after I had settled on one of the many empty seats.
"a cup of coffee. black." I replied.
"Anything else?" she inquired and i shook my head sideways to reply. She walked away to take care of my requests while I leaned back on my seat and took a deep breath. I was mentally exhausted, and it was all because of nobody like Sylvia mulberry. The thought of being rejected by a lady I once considered a nuisance had my blood curdling in both embarrassment and rage, but I held myself back from losing control.
While I sat there reveling in my thoughts, one of the three seated customers walked up to me, and my demeanor suddenly changed. I thought that she might be a fan and had seen through my disguise, but she hadn't approached for a picture or an autograph, instead she had come to ask me a question.
"Excuse me, did you drive here from that company over there?" she asked while she pointed at the thirty two storey skyscraper in the distance.
I wanted to ignore her or simply say no, but it seemed as though she had seen me drive to the cafe. she was probably only asking just for confirmation purposes. "umm...yes, is there a problem?" I answered right before the waitress arrived with my cup of coffee.
"oh it's nothing." the lady replied sharply with an awkward smile. "It's just that I'm new in town, and my husband is working in that company. I tried to get in earlier, but the receptionist wouldn't let me in without stating a valid reason for my visit." she explained and i arched a brow at her words.
people weren't denied access into the building because of some silly reason like the one she just gave. it was obvious she was lying, and had probably never even stepped foot inside the building before. However, just to be sure, I asked her who her 'husband' was.
"Michael Black." she replied confidently before brandishing pictures of him and the boss together.
"And who are you again?" I asked, my suspicions over the roof, as well as my curiosity.
"Melanie Grant" she replied sharply, before extending a handshake. "Nice to meet you..."
I ignored her outstretched hand and took the phone in her other hand to check if the pictures were real or photoshopped. ai was doing some ridiculous things these days, and there was no way to tell apart real or fake pictures nowadays. However, after careful observation of the pictures on her phone, I confirmed that they were indeed authentic. This woman could really be Michael Black's wife, or his lover at least.
she wasn't bearing his last name, so perhaps they were divorced? I really couldn't tell, and for that reason I couldn't give my identity away to her just yet. This could all be a clever charade, and the last thing I wanted right now was being a victim of some cleverly cooked up public prank.
"Have you tried calling your husband?" I asked as I handed the phone over to her, my brows still arched in confusion and suspicion.
her face fell in disappointment as she dialed michael black's phone number right in front of me and gave him a call. "he's not picking up, he must be busy."
"busy with another woman..." I muttered underneath my breath.
"Can you please help me out? I really want to see him before I leave." she pleaded, her ears teary and sad all of a sudden.
I couldn't deny the fact that she had things that pointed towards the fact that she was close to Michael Black. I really didn't buy the part of her being his wife, but from the beach pictures and everything she had shown me, it was pretty obvious that she had been in a relationship with Michael Black, or was in a relationship with Michael Black. Either way, this was the perfect opportunity to break Sylvie and Michael apart. If Michael Black was indeed playing Sylvie, then bringing this lady in to expose him might be the best idea.
"It's no problem ma'am, just wait until I'm done with my coffee." I replied before taking my time to drink the hot liquid. I definitely wanted to make sure Sylvie got what's coming for her, but that did not mean I'd leave a perfectly made coffee just to help out a stranger who might be lying.
After five minutes of slowly drinking my coffee, I was finally done, and we both drove back to the company in our cars. She seemed rich, and was definitely the type of woman I'd expect to see around Michael Black. I still found it hard that he'd go for someone like Sylvie without having some sort of motive in mind.
I led the lady through the doors, and we both entered the elevator straight to Michael's floor.
"So how did you meet the boss?" I inquired as we approached the office, heads held up, and hearts beating frantically—mine because of the drama that was about to start, and Melanie's out of anticipation.
"We were childhood friends, betrothed actually." she revealed and i recoiled briefly in mind surprise. This woman had a loose lip, either that or she wanted to flaunt the fact that she was betrothed to Michael black to everybody she came across.
I knocked at the office door, and after a brief silence I heard Michael's authoritative voice say, "enter."
Without wasting a second, I pushed the door in and walked in with a smile on my face.
"Someone wants to meet you mr black." I informed before gesturing for Melanie to enter. I watched Michael's jaw drop and swiftly tighten with anger in the same second. He clearly was not happy with the fact that I had brought this woman to his office, and he was not excited to meet her.
His gaze lingered on me for a brief moment before he finally turned towards the lady by my side, his eyes cold, yet burning with rage. He dropped the pen in his hand, and with a cold voice he questioned melanie. "Why are you still here?"
