It was supposed to be their own main battleground, but why the heck were the two groups throwing down in front of them?
Jake scratched his head.
Could it be... they decided to set up a rumble in their own backyard?
Meanwhile, Zane, with his tall figure, stood on the rooftop. He had seen the massive zombie horde approaching, so he didn't let his crew get involved.
Right now, with the two factions fighting fiercely, he could just enjoy the show.
"Go for it!"
He even cheered them on, thinking the worse they beat each other up, the better.
That red-eyed crow circled around Zane.
"Good man, good man, when's dinner at your place?"
"Hold your horses, it's gonna be a bit."
Zane responded without turning around.
Turns out, Mr. Crow was dropping by for a meal, hoping to snag a bite...
Far off on the battlefield, gunfire roared, flesh flew everywhere, limbs and body parts scattered, the stench of blood was pungent, like a scene straight out of hell.
Because humanity had unleashed their trump card, two three-meter-tall bio-modified humans—The Pursuers!
They were built like tanks, with huge foreheads stitched up like they had a giant centipede lying across them.
The Pursuers were wrapped in ammo belts, carrying massive hammers on their backs, and wielding Gatling guns in their right hands.
At that moment, the six barrels spun, and the flames of gunfire roared.
Countless bullets poured out.
Turning into a metallic storm.
Any zombie hit was either bisected at the waist or blown apart, dying a gruesome death.
If an elite zombie got close, The Pursuers weren't afraid of bites; they'd whip out their massive hammers and smash down hard.
Those hammers, made of some super dense material, looked to weigh about 40,000 pounds, smashing into the ground creating deep craters, turning any struck zombie into mush.
Zane watched the scene unfold, and couldn't help but reminisce about his childhood, when the orphanage would make dumplings during the New Year.
He was in charge of crushing garlic.
He felt the zombies' plight was pretty much like that garlic paste...
With the two Pursuers on the scene, humanity had a massive advantage. Even if the zombie horde was fierce, they couldn't break through.
Truly the heavy hitters of the 'Zombie Clearance Plan'!
The only thing folks gotta watch out for are those giant rats popping up from underfoot.
But the squad's decked out in nano combat suits, so even with those sharp rat teeth, they can't bite through, just leave some love bites on humans.
Goes to show, the King Hunter squad's got some chops.
In about five minutes, they wiped out six to seven thousand zombies, cutting down the massive zombie horde by a third.
And just then.
The Red-faced Zombie Overlord, sporting a 'scarf', strolled over leisurely.
Wondering if his minions had managed to take down Zane yet?
But one look and he sensed something was off.
His own minions were mixed up fighting with humans, especially noticeable were the two Pursuers, looking like 'garlic mashers', busy mashing away.
There were also human Awakeners using their special powers, wreaking havoc left and right, unstoppable.
"What's the deal here?"
"Boss... there's human Awakeners here, we got into it with them."
One elite zombie reported.
"Oh."
The Red-faced Zombie Overlord could see that much himself.
"What about the Zombie Overlord in that building?"
"Don't know, seems like he hasn't shown up yet."
"What?"
The Red-faced Zombie Overlord was livid, he came mainly to attack him, and now, seeing his forces already reduced, he hadn't even seen the enemy face-to-face.
That's just absurd!
"Boss, how come there are human Awakeners here?" a minion from behind asked.
The Red-faced Zombie Overlord couldn't figure it out, even though he had evolved some smarts, he wasn't exactly Einstein.
"Could it be... he's in cahoots with the humans?"
"Boss, is there a chance that the humans came to attack him too, and we just ran into them first?"
Another minion analyzed.
The Red-faced Zombie Overlord's eyes widened, feeling that made sense.
Did they mess up?
"Yikes!"
The more he thought about it, the more frustrated he got, squealing in anger.
"Boss, what do we do now? Should we pull back?"
"Retreat?"
The Red-faced Zombie Overlord's eyes gleamed with a murderous intent, having lost many minions, retreating would only add to the frustration. They had already paid a silent cost, only a total victory in this battle could make up for their losses.
Plus, humans were enemies too, their Core crystals even sweeter.
"There's no turning back now, attack! Wipe them out!"
"Roar—"
With that command from the boss, his minions roared.
If the boss says no retreat.
Then it's a full charge ahead.
Their eyes turned red, and they rushed into the fray, these zombies highly evolved, almost at Zombie Overlord level, their strength formidable.
"Yikes—squeak, squeak—"
Violet let out a high-pitched scream, leaping off Red's shoulder and scampering up to the top of a skyscraper.
As she moved, a dark mist began to drift from her body.
She's got some freaky powers too, like mind control!
"Uh-oh, the Zombie Overlord's shown up!"
Silas furrowed his brow, having already guessed what was up from that earth-shattering roar.
With a zombie horde this size, a Zombie Overlord had to be in the mix.
"Everyone, heads up, the real fight's kicking off now!"
"Got it!"
The crew responded in unison.
But strands of dark mist were already wafting over, enveloping a few of the armed folks.
"I'm so hungry!"
"Me too..."
"What's that over there?"
"The beach... I wanna hit the beach, grab a beer, and chow down on some seafood!"
"....."
One of the armed guys got a glazed look in his eyes, mimicking the motion of grabbing a beer, but instead, he pulled a grenade from his belt!
"Hey! Stop! What are you doing?"
Silas spotted the trouble and rushed to intervene.
But the guy had already pulled the pin.
"Cheers!"
Boom—!
The grenade exploded, engulfing him in flames, while shrapnel flew everywhere, piercing his nearby comrades.
These fragment grenades packed a serious punch.
But that wasn't the end of it.
Several more armed folks pulled out their own grenades.
"Cheers"
They raised their 'glasses' together, then went out with a bang!
Boom, boom, boom, boom!
A series of explosions followed, sending sand and shrapnel swirling like a storm.
Silas pushed his hands forward.
He was an Earth Awakener, and dirt coalesced between his hands into a thick earthen shield to block the blast.
The rest of the armed crew ducked behind an armored vehicle to avoid the shrapnel.
But panic was spreading in their hearts, their comrades who had just been fighting alongside them had suddenly blown themselves up...
Spooky!
That kind of invisible killing power was truly terrifying.
Silas's brow was tightly knotted, realizing they were under some sort of mind control.
"Harper, activate the mental barrier, locate the enemy."
"Right."
Harper nodded firmly.
He was a Psychic Awakener, and with a thought, a mental barrier unfolded, keeping the dark mist out and quickly pinpointing its source.
"There! Up there!"
Everyone followed his gaze and saw on the third-floor balcony a huge black rat with a fuzzy human face!
