Chapter 2 - Survive

In the year 2034 of the earthen calendar, humanity faced one of it's greatest disaster ever, bringing a change in not only the natural order, but changing the laws which governs it's existence itself.

The day, which no living being would ever forget for the rest of their lives, or what remains of it. The event, which instilled a profound fear of nature deep in their soul, was named 'The Red Catastrophe'.

The 'red' was not only symbiolic of the crimson moon that hung high above the lands on that day , but also of the acrid scent of iron that permeated the land on the fateful night.

Every corner of the planet, no matter how barren or deserted, was bathed in crimson, as long as there was even a shred of life inhabating the area prior to the disaster.

But the cause of it all, the reason for the suffering of countless people, the 'thing' that truly turned the world upside down in a single night, remained incomprehensible, enigmatic and baffling even after years.

The destruction brought about by the alien phenomenon termed as 'Mana' by the researchers at the time, can not be comprehended through words and gestures alone. One has to witness the change oneself to understand the horror that had descended over humanity.

It would have still been fine and understandable if the extent of the impact was limited to some superficial destruction of lands and changes in order of life such as change of habitat, climate changes, lose of some rare flora and fauna in certain places and perhaps an 'acceptable' number of human casualties.

But it turned out to be nothing more than wishful thinking....

As the destruction ensued, so the change along with it.

Mountains got thrashed, forests caught fire, path of rivers and their tributaries got changed, with some disappearing and others getting merged with oceans and seperating different pieces of land with one another.

Earthquakes occurred, time after time, along with tsunamis, destroying and drowning people and civilizations one after another with only their most primal screams left behind in the face of true despair.

Within 3 years, the surface area of earth which was initially covered with 29 percent land dropped to a staggering low of 2 percent with only two different continents remaining, with an unknown amount of life remaining on them.

The two new continents size , shape and other parameters were determined to be irrespective of any of the pre-existing continents due to excessive moving and crashing of tectonic plates which destroyed and reshaped the remaining mass of land that was left atop the ocean body with majority of it sinking down to the bottom of ocean floor.

But even after all the misfortune and tribulations that humans were made to undergo in front of them, humanity still didn't yield easily. All of it combined was still , just barely, not enough for humanity to go extinct.

Yes, there were still survivors living in one of the two new continents!

The exact situation was unknown, but to the survivors living on the continent, from time to time, there were some signs and evidences of other people presence in their surroundings.

Alas, even though humanity managed to not go extinct, the road of preservation and restoration was an arduous one.

It had to be remembered that humanity was caught completely off-guard when the 'first change' occured.

Although there were many abnormalities that can be regarded as a sign of a potential disaster, the actual scale of the catastrophe was far too enormous!

It's unknown how much of a difference would prior awareness about the happening would have made.

It's possible that it would have only served to fuel even more anxiety in the people, leading to even more mishappenings.

Anyway,

During the disaster, the sole word that occupied the minds of people and reverberated inside them with unnerving intensity was 'survive'.

As the calamities approached them, their insticts gnawed at them to try and escape their tragic fates.

All those years of peace and ignorance were showing their effect as in the face of death, the only thing masses were capable of was to shout curses at the government and hysterically ran away here and there, letting their trepidation completely took over them, with not an ounce of rationality to be seen in their actions.

But not all were foolish. There were still a small amount of people who managed to hold their nerves and managed to preserve themselves in the time of crisis.

Although government agencies could have been said to have put in their best of efforts, it did little to alleviate the damage caused by the sheer scale of the portentous event.

But as if to laugh in the despairing faces of people, reality pulled another cruel joke on their destinies.

As originally presumed, the sun vanishing from the sky and getting replaced by the large red diamond was the starting cause for the 'Red Diamond Catastrophe'.

Although the phenomenon of sun vanishing itself was not witnessed by the majority of the masses , it was confirmed as such with the help of satellites and technology before the failure of the system.

Ignoring the emergence of the Red diamond, the disappearance of sun itself posed numerous threat, each threatening the chances of survivability of mankind.

The two most prominent threats of the group were as follows.

First, the disappearance of sun will cause the Earth and all other objects in solar system to continue their forward motion in a straight line off into space, instead of following their almost circular orbits. As a result, Earth would become an inhospitable wasteland drifting aimlessly through space.

This problem was mysteriously solved by the giant diamond as it acted as the new centripetal force, making earth revolve around it's own orbit.

It has to be noted that although the size of the diamond was determined to be similar or even larger to that of the sun, the only light from the diamond that ever reached the earth's surface was the one that was reflected by the moon towards it.

Due to the aforementioned reason, the planet earth never saw the light again, or, all it saw was the same crimson moon which struck fear in their hearts radiating a faint red light on the earth's surface for few hours a day.

Yes, the faint red glow of the moon was the only light that shined upon them as the planet got hooded by a black sky for the rest of their lives.

The second prominent threat that needed to be addressed was the absence of sunlight. Without the Sun's rays, all photosynthesis on Earth would stop. All plants would die and, eventually, all animals that rely on plants for food — including humans — would die, too.

Or such was supposed to happen....

It's unknown if it was a blessing in disguise or another cruel joke of fate, but...

The new energy MANA... Started to bare it's fangs on the habitants of the world.

As the mana started to invade their bodies, all living things, be it plants, animals or humans, all started to see changes in their inherent consitution.

As it seeped deeper and deeper in their body, mana started to change the basic anatomy of a living body, remodeling it from scratch.

After a period of time and countless cycles of evolutions and mutations, the change finally slowed down as most living organisms started adapting to it but the damage was already done and the results were beyond horrific.

Some plants gained sentience, others gaining face, limbs, reproductive parts and appendages, or all of the above as they started walking the lands, with varingly disgusting and vile organs portruding out of their bodies.

They gained sentience but their actions were all driven purely based on their instincts.

The various animal species were far worse off than them as the mutations they were subjected to was much more drastic than the flora.

Over time, these animals developed sharper teeth, stronger jaws, heightened senses, and increased aggression to better hunt and dominate their prey, ultimately leading to a transformation into bloodthirsty creatures.

Their increased size, stronger bodies, grueling appearances, unbridled desires, made them a repulsive species of beasts that ony know how to mate and hunt.

As these ferocious creatures run amok on the land, threatening the life of all, they along with mutated species of plants, were termed as "monsters."

All of these new lifeforms that will inhabit this post-apocalypse earth, along with the "new humans" will continue to vie for dominance in the coming years as the survival of the fittest will once again be the only law that governs the hierarchy of this changed world.

The end of it all is unknown but one thing can be said for sure that only the strong will survive, while the weak will have everything taken from them, along with their lives, in this cruel and inhumane world.
