Alexander pov
I sat in the study, my mind a jumble of thoughts. Everything seemed muddled. I wanted to call off the engagement ceremony with Elder Eason, but I couldn't bring myself to say it. Apart from a few close ones, no one knew about Linda's congenital heart disease, her lengthy stay at Switzerland's top hospital. Her attending physician, Dr. phill, had said her fragile body couldn't handle a heart transplant due to potential rejection. So Elder Eason had to abandon the surgery. Dr. phill also mentioned she might only live until twenty-seven—just two more years.
Suddenly, my phone rang insistently, snapping me out of my thoughts. Frowning at the screen's name, I reluctantly answered.
"Elder Allen, what's the matter calling this late?"
"Oh, it's just Linda missing you! The girl's too shy to call herself, so she got this old man to check up on you. How have you been?" Elder Eason chuckled, clearly doting on his granddaughter.
