Rex knew that the origin of both Key Stones and Mega Evolution Stones was the Kalos region, though he was unsure if they existed elsewhere. The unique natural environment of Kalos likely contributed to this evolutionary miracle.
The Kalos region is star-shaped, with its center being Lumiose City. According to the Pokédex, it can be divided into three areas: the coastline in the northwest, the central region, and the mountainous northeast. The central area, with vast forests and many rivers, has towns surrounded by ancient walls and numerous castles, such as Parfum Palace. The coastal area is a narrow stretch between mountains and the sea on the western coast, while the mountain area in the northeast is surrounded by high peaks and colder climates, with some parts covered in snow. There's also a desert to the north and snowy lands to the east, with rivers flowing through the region.
The legendary Pokémon Xerneas and Yveltal, known as the God of Life and the God of Destruction, are central to Kalos's mythology. Xerneas brings life energy to the region, nourishing the land, while Yveltal absorbs life energy, bringing death to all living things. They symbolize the cycle of life and death, which is why they are revered.
Though Rex still couldn't figure out why he can generated such high-quality life energy daily, he believed that finding Xerneas was key to unlocking his abilities. He even hoped to learn the cause of his body's unusual state from the Life Pokémon, as no other creature likely knew more about life energy.
Rex had another reason to go to Kalos: the Diamond Domain, home to countless Carbink, was located there. Diancie, a mythical Pokémon and princess of the Diamond Domain, ruled over it. Though Rex had no clue about the exact location of the Diamond Domain, he was confident that he would uncover its whereabouts once he arrived in Kalos.
Rex noticed that the diamond atop his Carbink's head had started glowing pink. Up close, he could see tiny pink spots inside the diamond. Although the diamond hadn't completely turned pink, the increase in pink energy was strengthening Carbink's Fairy-type abilities. In addition to the Fairy-type move Dazzling Gleam, Carbink had also recently learned Charm and Moonblast.
However, Rex's main hope was for Carbink to learn Misty Terrain, a move similar to Grassy Terrain. Misty Terrain prevents Pokémon in the area from being affected by status conditions, and it halves the damage from Dragon-type moves. Though this feature isn't particularly useful for Carbink, who is already resistant to Dragon-type attacks, mastering Misty Terrain would significantly enhance Carbink's control over Fairy-type energy.
Rex believed that Carbink's evolution into Diancie hinged on its ability to control both Fairy-type and life energy. Merely filling the diamond atop Carbink's head with pink energy wouldn't guarantee its evolution. To truly evolve, Carbink needed to refine its mastery of these energies, like a child handling a large hammer—without the necessary control, the outcome could be disastrous.
Filling the diamond with the combined energy of Fairy-type and life energy would only provide Carbink with the foundation to evolve into Diancie. Whether it could harness that foundation would depend on its control over the two energies.
Having witnessed the power of mythical Pokémon like Celebi and Shaymin, Rex knew how powerful they could become, and their strength seemed to tap into something resembling universal rules. Evolving a regular Pokémon like Carbink into Diancie was far more difficult than evolving a Magikarp into Gyarados or a Feebas into Milotic.
For now, Rex shared what he knew about Misty Terrain with Carbink, hoping it could understand. Though he could look for another Fairy-type Pokémon to teach Carbink the move, finding such a Pokémon in Hoenn, a region with limited research on Fairy types, would be challenging. If necessary, Rex planned to search for one when he eventually traveled to Kalos.
Still, Rex preferred for Carbink to master Misty Terrain on its own. The process of learning to manipulate Fairy-type energy would greatly benefit its evolution.
To train its control over life energy, Rex considered teaching Carbink Rest. While Rest wasn't very useful in battles due to its tendency to leave the user vulnerable, it was a practical skill for honing life energy. Rest is a Psychic-type move because it involves self-hypnosis using Psychic energy to induce sleep, during which life energy heals the body.
Snorlax was the best user of Rest on Rex's farm, spending over three-quarters of its time asleep. While sleeping, Snorlax's body automatically healed any damage, and only severe injuries could wake it up. Combined with the Sleep Talk move, Snorlax could even defeat weaker Pokémon in its sleep.
Carbink trusted Rex's guidance, especially since its diamond had started turning pink, making it quite proud of its appearance. Rex also shared his hope of evolving it into Diancie, which initially overwhelmed Carbink. After a few days of processing, it settled down and became even more devoted to Rex's training regimen.
Thus, when Rex suggested learning Misty Terrain and Rest, Carbink eagerly agreed, determined to master them both.
