Chapter 1 - Teaser

"Hypocrites! All of them!" The man lying on the bed screamed in his mind. His body was paralyzed but his mind wasn't. And so, his mother, grabbing his left hand earnestly, cried out for him: "Oh Reza! What will I not give to have you back healthy?"

'Hah! What great acting, mother! But not now, I see right through you. You act as if it was not you who poisoned my food everyday! How dare you, dear mother, to mourn me now?' he thought angrily." Oh that accursed day! My son- My dear son--" She started caressing his forehead as she cried.

Her sobbing was soon interrupted by a loud bang of the door through which a shaved young man had just appeared, carrying a bag. 'There you are!' The patient thought, 'The very same brother whom I fed and nourished. For whom I surrendered my education so that he could become a doctor. The very same, who conspired for this state of mine. Tell me, dear Elia, what gift do you have for me today?'

Looking towards the crippled man, his brother's eyes trembled but he did not falter and moved over to the mother: "Calm down, mother. I am here now. "He procured a filled syringe from the bag and kept looking at it pensively. Knowing what was to follow, Reza calmly closed his eyes, accepting his fate. The mother, crying vehemently, looked away from her sons and turned around, her sobs slowly turning into shrieks.

As the needle pierced into the skin, Elia, the doctor tried to remain calm but his hands betrayed his composure. With trembling hands, he pulled the injection out and the mother turned to him, resting her head against the broad shoulder of her second son, tears running down her face. Slowly, lazily, Reza could feel the screams fading until nothing could be heard or felt anymore. The poison had taken effect. His last thought was the same as what the doctor had said a moment ago: "Goodbye, brother."

"Diamonds & pearls are thine-

And eyes that ever brightly shine."

Jean Jules, second born to Baron Jules jumped about the garden playfully, singing around his favorite melodies. For the most part, his had been a good day; all his friends had agreed to play Doctor with him, he had succeeded in persuading Mother to lift the sweets' ban off him and Father's health also showed positive progress.

'If not for this errand, it would have been a perfect day.' He thought as he looked over to the lake in the garden, on the other bank of which, on the lone wooden bench, sat his cold, older brother.

"Why... did Mother have to order me to call him for supper myself? Everyone knows he hates me." He complained to his servant, who was also a very good friend to him. "Don't be so harsh on yourself, young lord." He tried to pacify him, "Lord Elijah just doesn't like anyone in general."

But the young boy knew it inherently, that this was something more than just plain dislike. Right then, Elijah looked at him straight in the eye with his cold and harsh stare that made Jean scared; even from such a distance. Heart beating fast, he complained: "Never mind that, I'll just tell her I forgot." He hastily strutted back inside.
