Chapter 28 - Progress of Healing

The camp was in chaos. After Lysander's revelation and his venomous attack, the children scrambled to tend to the wounded. The boy struck by the poisoned dagger lay on the ground, his face pale and clammy as the toxin spread through his body. Evelyn immediately took charge, her calm and determined demeanor bringing some semblance of order.

"Kenshin, fetch the herbs we gathered earlier," Evelyn instructed, her voice steady but urgent. "We need to make a poultice to slow the poison."

Kenshin nodded and hurried to their supply cache, his mind racing. He found the herbs and brought them back to Evelyn, who quickly began to crush and mix them into a paste. She applied the poultice to the boy's wound, hoping it would buy them enough time to find a more permanent solution.

Meanwhile, Khalid stood nearby, his face a mask of fury. He watched as the other children tended to the wounded, his eyes flicking between them and the purple-haired boy who had been falsely accused. The guilt and anger were palpable, creating a tense atmosphere.

Evelyn glanced at Khalid, her expression softening. "Khalid, we need to address this. Apologize to him," she said, gesturing towards the purple-haired boy.

Khalid's jaw tightened, but he nodded reluctantly. He approached the boy, who was standing off to the side, still looking defensive and wary. "I'm sorry," Khalid said, his voice gruff. "I shouldn't have accused you without proof."

The purple-haired boy looked at Khalid for a long moment before nodding curtly. "I'm used to it," he replied, his voice cold. "But don't think I'll forget this."

Evelyn stepped forward, her gaze fixed on the purple-haired boy. "We owe you an apology," she said sincerely. "Can you tell us your name?"

The boy hesitated before answering. "My name is Darius," he said, his tone softening slightly out of respect for Evelyn. "Just don't expect me to be all friendly now."

Evelyn nodded, understanding. "We don't expect that. But we do need to work together if we're going to survive."

Khalid watched the exchange, his anger simmering just below the surface. He still felt a deep resentment towards the other kids, especially after nearly being part of a wrongful execution. But for now, he knew they had to focus on the immediate crisis.

As night fell, the children took turns keeping watch, their eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of Lysander. The wounded boy's condition stabilized, but they knew the poison was still a threat. Evelyn and Kenshin worked tirelessly, using every bit of knowledge they had to keep him alive.

Darius kept to himself, his mistrust of the group evident. He trained alone, his movements precise and aggressive, as if he were venting his frustration and anger on invisible foes. Despite his distance, he couldn't help but notice how the group was coming together under Evelyn's leadership.

Kenshin, exhausted but determined, finally allowed himself to rest for a moment. As he lay down, he couldn't help but feel a deep sense of unease. Lysander was still out there, a lurking danger that could strike at any moment. But for now, they had survived another day, and that was something.

In the quiet of the night, Evelyn sat by the wounded boy, her thoughts heavy with the weight of their situation. They had come through so much, and there was still so much more to face. But as she looked at the children around her, she felt a glimmer of hope. They were stronger together, and that unity would be their greatest weapon against the challenges to come.
