Chapter 22 - VENTIDUESIMA: Did You Kill My Son

NOAH stared at the body of his son.

He couldn't hear his heartbeat.

There was no wound or any sign of injury. He guessed that the bullet wasn't meant to do physical harm. Instead, it was designed to stop his heart from pumping blood.

The only solution was to jumpstart his heart.

Irene was busy comforting Lisa who couldn't stop crying.

"Irene," he called, "let's see if we can jumpstart his heart."

Seeing as CPR didn't work, Noah wasn't so sure his charism would either and if it did he could damage his son's heart.

The only option was to use Irene's electric charism.

Before they could even move, black tendrils shot out from the ground forming an impenetrable wall. Blanc had pushed his wife towards Leo's body before the wall had been completed, leaving him alone on his side of the wall.

He stood up and brushed his trousers.

"I take it that you're Noah Blanc, right?" a feminine voice asked behind him.

He didn't turn.

Whoever had asked the question laughed to herself.

"This is going to be interesting," she cackled.

The old man hadn't acknowledged her presence yet.

Belial had to kill him. He was her target.

She had barged into the building unannounced so she wasn't wearing the dress code. Instead she wore bum shorts and a bra top. Her black hair was at shoulder length and her blue eyes gleamed devilishly as she approached him.

She would end him in an instant.

Her chest exploded.

She was stunned and looked at the old geezer.

The room began to vibrate violently.

"Did you kill my son?" he asked and turned towards her.

Belial laughed.

"What if I did?" she asked. "Besides this wound'll -"

Her head exploded into a million pieces.

He walked towards the wall and tried breaking through it.

It didn't work.

"You can't destroy it," she said. Her head had already regenerated. "You can keep hitting and hitting me but you won't -"

He pulled out some coins from his pocket.

"What are you going to do with that?"

He flicked one and the next thing she knew her hand had been chopped off.

"I'm going to kill you."

Reyna pulled the demon's body with some of her webs.

It caused it to go off balance and Isaac stabbed its chest.

The demon cut the web and recoiled in pain.

Reyna couldn't say that she wasn't scared.

This was a demon's true form, she thought to herself. She knew she wouldn't be of much use her but she still came anyway.

The demon removed the blades and headed her way.

She grinned.

Her plan was going well.

There was a huge explosion and the shock wave knocked her back.

She had attached a grenade to its back when she had shot the webs earlier. There were other tricks up her sleeve but she had to be careful when executing them.

Quinn gasped.

"That was terrifying," he said to himself and ducked under the wire that was about to end his life. It was so thin a person walking forward wouldn't notice it from their point of view.

He walked into the vault cautiously.

There were a number of artifacts he could steal but Quinn only needed one.

It wasn't flashy or anything but it was crucial to their plan. It was actually the most invaluable thing in the room.

He stared at the rusty lance in its display case at the opposite side of the room.

The owners of the vault probably didn't recognize its value.

After many trials and errors, he finally got to the display case.

There was a keypad on the case, and it required a pin.

His smile turned into a frown.

"I've got a long night ahead of me," he sighed.

Camilla wasn't going to let them have their way.

She had evacuated most of the people in the room when the wraiths came. There were hundreds of them all coming from the black wall on the other side of the room, and they were increasing by the second.

A wraith approached her. It was a gorilla with six arms and huge fangs.

She activated her charism. Gold thread shot out from her arms and formed a spear. She impaled the wraith and dispersed the thread. She used the thread to wrap the wraith into a cocoon. She said a short prayer and pulled the thread, causing the cocoon to squeeze the wraith until it burst into a shower of light.

That was just one of the big ones.

She couldn't utilize her charism very well with people around her. When the last of the people had left, she wrapped the doors with her thread to prevent the wraiths from going after them.

"It's just you and me," she said and began weaving.

Isaac couldn't maintain the power anymore.

The light in his eyes died, and the sudden burst of energy he'd gotten suddenly dissipated.

The demon cackled, and Isaac backed up.

"Where did that barbaric bloodlust go to?" it asked. "Seems like you're out of juice."

The demon towered over Isaac.

"No!" Reyna screamed, and Isaac looked to his side. He was just noticing her for the first time since he had encountered the demon.

When did she get here? he thought. She'd removed the detachable part of her garment, making movement easier. Other than the cut on her cheek, she seemed okay.

The demon grabbed his neck and put its talons over Isaac's chest.

"This is where it ends," it said, exhaling the metallic smell of blood onto Isaac's face.

Something crashed into the tower and knocked the demon aside.

Isaac fell to his knees, gasping for air, and Reyna rushed over to him.

"You okay?" she asked.

"Yeah," he replied as they moved away.

Blanc was standing where the hole in the wall was with green flames on his fists. Isaac was reminded of when he and Reyna had gone against Bael.

"Get out of here," Blanc ordered them.

"But -" Isaac started.

"GO!" Blanc yelled as the rubble began to shift.

"You're in no condition to fight," Reyna reminded him, and they ran down towards the exit.

Blanc watched them leave.

He wouldn't let any harm come to them as it had befell his son.

The two demons stood up.

The female one seemed unharmed, but the other one was badly wounded. He wasn't sure he could handle both of them even with his curse activated.

"Can't believe you actually punched a woman," she said, dusting the dust off her clothes.

"We both know you're not human," Noah replied.

They both charged at him.

He was poised to strike when the other demon made a sharp turn towards the exit.

"No, you don't," he said. He turned to stop that demon, but the female one blocked his path.

"Where do you think you're going?" she said and pulled out a whip from her back.

Isaac and Reyna tore through the maze.

There were wraiths chasing them.

"How do we get out of this bloody maze?" Isaac asked as they took a left.

"Just follow me," replied Reyna as she took the lead.

They'd almost reached the heart of the maze when something shot past them.

"It's about time I killed you already," the demon said and landed in front of them.

Multiple small objects formed around the demon, and Isaac realized that they were bullets.

Isaac tried using his so-called 'divine' charism again, but it didn't work.

"Get out of my sight," the demon said and fired the bullets.

Reyna jumped in front of Isaac, willing to take the bullets, but they stopped right in front of them.

"What the -" the demon started, and the top half of its head exploded.

"What did I miss?" a familiar voice said behind them.
