"What are you doing here?" Mara said as she stood there, shocked, her eyes wide with confusion.
Mr. Warren III met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "Is this how you welcome visitors?"
Mara folded her arms, trying to mask her surprise. "Do I need to act a certain way when someone shows up at my door unannounced?"
He raised an eyebrow. "I thought I'd drop by and see how you're doing. Is that so strange?"
"Yes, it is," Mara replied, her tone sharp, "especially since this is my home, not the office."
Max took a step closer, his gaze still fixed on her. "I know that already, but does that mean I'm not welcome?"
Mara hesitated, unsure of her thoughts. "Why are you really here?" she asked.
"Can I at least sit down?" he said, glancing inside Mara's apartment.
Mara looked at him, her hands still folded, and used her leg to push the door shut, her stance firm.
