Chapter 74 - A Guardian's Blood

As night fell, Belial and the four girls - Clare, Rachel, Hannah, and Ellie - moved silently through the oak trees toward the temple. The air was cool and crisp, and the moon cast a silver glow on the path ahead. Shadows danced among the trees, adding an air of mystery to their journey. Each step brought them closer to their destination and to the looming confrontation with the temple's guardian.

Looking back across the town it was clear now how it had received the name Silvermoon. The town sparkling like a pieces of polished jewelry.

Belial led the way, his eyes scanning the surroundings with a mix of caution and determination. Behind him, the girls walked in single file, their expressions tense yet resolute. They had prepared as best they could, but the uncertainty of what lay ahead weighed heavily on their minds.

The temple emerged from the darkness like a specter, its towering structure silhouetted against the night sky. Ancient and majestic, it exuded an aura of power and reverence. The massive stone walls were adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes of worship and divine intervention. Torches flickered along the perimeter, casting eerie shadows that seemed to dance in time with the night breeze.

"Remember," Belial whispered, his voice barely audible, "we must remain silent and alert. The guardian will not be easily defeated."

Clare nodded, her hand gripping the hilt of her sword tightly. Rachel and Ellie exchanged glances, their expressions mirroring the determination they felt. Hannah, ever the healer, silently prepared her magic, ready to aid her companions if needed.

They reached the temple's rear entrance, a hidden passage concealed by a thick curtain of ivy. Belial pushed the foliage aside, revealing a narrow stone staircase descending into darkness. He motioned for the others to follow, and they descended into the depths, their footsteps echoing softly against the cold stone walls.

As Belial looked around he could tell the thieves had not arrived yet. "We are in time," he said, "we will take what we need and be gone, leaving them to deal with the aftermath.:

The staircase opened into a vast chamber, dimly lit by a series of torches lining the walls. The air was heavy with the scent of incense, mingling with the faint odor of ancient stone and earth. At the far end of the chamber stood a massive door, adorned with symbols of the four gods worshipped within the temple.

As they approached the door, a low rumble reverberated through the chamber. The ground beneath their feet trembled, and the air grew thick with an oppressive energy. One of the guardians was awakening.

From the shadows emerged a figure, towering and imposing. It was a golem, its body composed of stone and metal, eyes glowing with an ethereal light. The guardian moved with a fluid grace that belied its massive form, each step sending tremors through the chamber.

Belial stepped forward, his eyes blazing with determination. "Prepare yourselves," he commanded, his voice steady. "This will be our greatest challenge yet."

The guardian let out a deafening roar, and the battle began. Rachel charged forward, her sword gleaming in the torchlight as she struck at the golem's legs. Sparks flew as metal clashed against stone, and the guardian retaliated with a powerful swipe of its arm. Rachel dodged just in time, rolling to the side and coming up ready for another attack.

Clare and Ellie flanked the guardian, their weapons slicing through the air with precision. Clare's magic struck true, embedding magical arrows in the joints of the golem's limbs, while Ellie's twin daggers found purchase in the gaps between its stone plates. The guardian roared in anger, its movements becoming more erratic as it struggled to fend off the relentless assault.

Hannah, staying back from the fray, chanted a healing spell, her hands glowing with a soft, soothing light. Whenever one of her companions was struck by the guardian's powerful blows, she would send a wave of healing energy their way, mending their wounds and bolstering their strength.

Belial, meanwhile, summoned his dark magic, sending tendrils of shadow to wrap around the golem's limbs. The guardian strained against the bindings, its strength formidable, but Belial's magic held firm. With a final, powerful incantation, he sent a surge of energy through the tendrils, causing the guardian to convulse and falter.

"Now!" Belial shouted, his voice echoing through the chamber.

Rachel and Ellie moved in unison, their blades striking the golem's legs simultaneously. The guardian let out a pained roar as it crumbled to its knees, its stone form cracking under the combined assault. Clare loosed a final spell, striking the golem's head and shattering the glowing gem that served as its eye.

The guardian let out a final, mournful wail before collapsing into a heap of rubble, liquid slowly oozing from its remains. The chamber fell silent, the oppressive energy dissipating as quickly as it had appeared.

Breathing heavily, the group gathered around the fallen golem, their expressions a mix of relief and exhaustion. "We did it," Rachel said, her voice trembling with a mixture of triumph and disbelief.

"Yes," Belial replied, a hint of pride in his voice. Stepping forward he removed a vile from his robe and began to collect the liquid that was pooling around the remains of the guardian. "But this is only the beginning. We must quickly leave the temple, before the intruders arrive."

The girls nodded, their resolve renewed. Together, they turned and made their way back toward the entrance they had used to enter the temple. Leaving, they made sure the doorway was properly secured and left no trace to indicate they had been there. Beyond, of course the body of the guardian, for the others to find. The battle with the guardian had tested their strength and unity, but they knew that greater challenges awaited them.

With Belial leading the way, they ventured back toward the Inn, having completed their quest and secured the liquid that held Belial valued more than the artifact it protected.

You have done well," he spoke to the four, "we will rest here tonight and tomorrow I shall return you to your home until I have need of you again.
