Chapter 64 - Day Three

Sarah woke up to the blaring sound of Dusty's alarm echoing in her ears. Groggily, she reached over and silenced it, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand. It was day two in their new town since she had gotten the injection, and despite experiencing some fatigue, she felt a spark of excitement for what the day might bring.

Yesterday's visit to the lab went well, Dr. Marchant was there and she took a blood sample but told Sarah that everything was looking good at that point. She was to come back the next day but until then, she was to just continue with her daily routine.

After dressing in warm, comfortable clothes, Sarah and Dusty headed out to the bustling market. The morning air was crisp, and the sky was painted with the soft hues of dawn. As they strolled through the market, Sarah's senses were bombarded by the vibrant sights and sounds. She loved the mingling aromas of freshly baked bread, ripe fruits, and spices. The vendors called out their wares, their voices a harmonious blend of enthusiasm and familiarity.

Sarah and Dusty meandered from stall to stall, chatting with the friendly vendors who greeted them with warm smiles. They picked up fresh produce, savoring the chance to select from a bounty of fruits and vegetables. Sarah marveled at the colorful array of goods, each item a testament to the resilience and creativity of the townspeople.

"This place is incredible," Sarah remarked, holding up a bunch of plump, juicy grapes. "It feels so normal, yet so different, it seems like every time we visit here it is bigger and busier than it was the day before."

Dusty nodded, his eyes scanning the stalls. "It's nice, isn't it? To do something so ordinary. It reminds us that there's still a lot of good in the world."

As they continued to explore the market, Sarah couldn't help but feel a sense of normalcy. Despite her condition and the stress of waiting, she was participating in a simple, human activity, surrounded by people who treated her with kindness and respect. It was a comforting reminder that she was still a person with feelings and emotions.

After a leisurely lunch at a quaint café, they decided to visit some of the local shops. Sarah visited the charming bookstore tucked away on a side street, She had found it on one of her previous trips around town. Its window displays brimming with well-loved novels and intriguing new releases. She picked up a new book, relishing the familiar scent of printed pages. Dusty, on the other hand, found some new clothes that caught his eye, and they both left the shop bags and packages to take home.

The evening brought a sense of coziness as they gathered with William and Samantha for a card game. The living room was warm and inviting, the fire crackling in the hearth casting a soft glow over the room. Laughter and playful banter filled the air as they shuffled the deck and dealt the cards. Sarah felt a deep sense of gratitude for her friends and for Dusty's unwavering support.

"You know," Samantha said, pausing to take a bite of a cookie, "this feels like old times. Just hanging out and enjoying each other's company."

William nodded in agreement, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Yeah, it's been a while since we were sitting around the fire in the abandoned back in St. Joseph. I don't miss those days."

Sarah smiled, her heart swelling with warmth. "I'm so glad we have each other," she said, glancing around at her friends. "We've been through so much, but we've come out stronger because of it. Thank you all for everything you have done for me."

As the night wore on, they packed up the cards and prepared for bed. Sarah, however, found it hard to sleep. Her mind raced with thoughts of what the next day would bring. She tossed and turned, her anxiety gnawing at the edges of her consciousness. If things were not going to work she should be seeing signs within the next day.

The next morning, Sarah woke up feeling a knot of anxiety in her stomach. She knew that today was the day, she would be going back to the lab for another blood test but it was also day three, and the urge to eat would be starting today if the injection didn't work. The thought filled her with dread, and she couldn't shake the feeling of uncertainty that had settled over her.

Dusty noticed her unease and wrapped his arms around her, his touch warm and reassuring. "Hey, what's wrong?" he asked softly.

Sarah sighed, leaning into his embrace. "I'm just nervous about today. I don't know what will happen."

Dusty held her closer, his voice soothing. "You'll be fine, Sarah. You're strong and capable. And I'll be right there with you no matter what."

Sarah nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She took a deep breath, letting Dusty's words sink in. His support gave her the strength she needed to face the day.

As they walked to the lab, the morning sun cast long shadows across the cobblestone streets. The town was waking up, and the familiar sounds of daily life filled the air. Despite the normalcy around her, Sarah couldn't shake the feeling of trepidation that had settled in her chest.

Dr. Mullins and Dr. Marchant were waiting for them at the entrance of the lab, their faces serious but kind. "Good morning, Sarah," Dr. Mullins greeted her with a reassuring smile. "Are you ready for your next blood test?"

Sarah nodded, trying to push aside her doubts. "Yes, I'm ready."

"Let's go," Dr. Marchant said, leading them down the sterile hallways to the testing room. The sound of their footsteps echoed off the walls, amplifying Sarah's nerves.

As they entered the testing room, Sarah's heart pounded in her chest. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. This was just another step towards her future, another hurdle to overcome. She glanced at Dusty, who gave her a reassuring nod. His presence was a constant reminder that she wasn't alone in this.

Dr. Mullins prepared the equipment, explaining each step to Sarah as she worked. "We'll take a another small sample and run some tests. How are you feeling this morning?"

Sarah watched as the needle pierced her skin, feeling a slight sting. She clenched her fists, focusing on Dusty's calming presence. This was just another test, another challenge to face. She could do this.

"So far, I am good, no urges or anything to indicate I'm getting hungry." she told them.

As the blood was drawn, Sarah's mind raced with thoughts. What would the results show? Would she be able to control her hunger? Could she lead a normal life despite everything that had happened?

Dr. Marchant looked into her eyes, she confidently spoke, "Sarah, you are doing great, don't worry, we will see you tomorrow, if things go well, we will talk about where to next. If not, don't worry, we will figure something out."

As they left, both Sarah and Dusty took comfort from the words she had said, they would get through this.
