As they walked through the town, Sarah couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and relief. They had finally made it, and they were safe behind the fenced walls of the community. She could see the regular patrols making their rounds. As they walked around Sarah got a few looks from the survivor's. Some could still tell she was zombie but once she smiled and spoke, they would quickly move on.
Alex smiled warmly as he led them to their new homes. "Welcome to our new home," he said. "You're going to love it here. Once you get settled in, we'll meet up to talk about the future and what we can do to help each other rebuild."
Sarah and Dusty nodded eagerly, feeling a sense of hope for the first time in months. They couldn't wait to start making new friends and building a new life.
As they walked around the town, they met five other survivors who had also made it to the community. There was Maria, a young woman who had lost her family in the early days of the outbreak; Jake, a rugged outdoorsman who had survived on his own for months; Emily, a shy but resourceful young woman who had managed to find a small group of survivors; Ryan, a former soldier who had been fighting against the zombies; and Rachel, a quiet but determined woman who had managed to survive on her own with her young daughter.
As they sat down to lunch together, Sarah couldn't help but feel a sense of camaraderie with the others. Taking turns, they all shared stories of their survival, and Sarah was amazed by their resilience and determination.
Maria spoke about losing her family and having to fend for herself, while Jake talked about his experiences as a solo survivor. Emily shared stories of her small group's struggles and triumphs, while Ryan spoke about his experiences as a soldier fighting against the zombies. Rachel talked about raising her daughter on her own, and Sarah was struck by her strength and courage.
As they compared notes, Sarah realized that they had all learned so much from each other. They had learned how to survive, how to adapt, and how to make do with what they had.
As they finished up lunch, Sarah felt a sense of gratitude towards the others. She knew that they had all been through so much, and yet they were still here, still fighting.
Sarah then shared her story, from her lost memories, to visiting the lab and remembering, to the fact that she hated being what they had turned her into.
Dusty took her hand, "We will find a cure, I promise you."
"Thank you," she said to the others, her voice filled with emotion. "Thank you for being here. Thank you for being strong and for sharing your stories with us."
The others nodded in agreement, and Sarah knew that they would be okay. They would face challenges ahead, but they would face them together.
Sarah walked through the familiar streets of the town, her thoughts consumed by the pressing need that had brought her here. With each step, her unease grew, the weight of her impending task pressing down on her shoulders like a heavy burden.
Arriving at the modest clinic nestled among the other buildings, Sarah pushed open the door and stepped inside, the warmth of the interior a stark contrast to the biting cold of the winter air outside. Dr. Mullins, the physician and scientist they had met with the resistance was sitting there. Hearing someone enter, he looked up from his desk leaving the paperwork behind, his expression kind and welcoming.
"Sarah, what brings you here today?" Dr. Mullins asked, gesturing for her to take a seat opposite him.
Taking a deep breath, Sarah gathered her thoughts before speaking. "I... I need to talk to you about something," she began, her voice tinged with a hint of apprehension.
As she explained her predicament to Dr. Mullins, his brow furrowed in concern. He listened attentively as she described her upcoming need to venture outside the safety of the town walls in search of sustenance, her words tinged with a mixture of reluctance and resignation.
But to Sarah's surprise, Dr. Mullins offered her a reassuring smile. "You needn't worry, Sarah," he said gently. "We have measures in place to ensure that everyone's needs are taken care of, even in these difficult times."
With that, Dr. Mullins led Sarah to the back of the clinic, where a small laboratory was housed. Inside, she saw a group of individuals diligently at work, their faces obscured by protective masks as they went about their tasks.
"These are our hunters," Dr. Mullins explained, gesturing toward the group. "They go out each day to gather supplies, including meat for our... unconventional needs."
Sarah's eyes widened in surprise as Dr. Mullins handed her a small package containing the flesh she required. Despite the unsettling nature of the situation, she couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over her.
"Because of the work we are doing in the lab we do need to keep a few zombies around. As a result we need to bring in the flesh to keep them fed." Dr. Mullins explained. "Like you, if they go too long without flesh they can get aggressive and that makes the work even harder. When you need some, please come here and we will provide it to you."
"Thank you," Sarah murmured gratefully, her fingers tightening around the package.
As she made her way back to the safety of their makeshift home, Sarah couldn't shake the feeling of gratitude that filled her heart. She knew that she owed a debt of gratitude to Dr. Mullins and the others who worked tirelessly to ensure the survival of the town's inhabitants, even in the face of unimaginable challenges.
Later, as she shared the news with Dusty, she couldn't help but feel a sense of optimism for the first time in a long while. With the support of their community behind them, she knew that they would be able to face whatever challenges lay ahead, together.
