Chereads / A Rebel Zombie / Chapter 14 - Is it a Safehouse

Chapter 14 - Is it a Safehouse

The jewelry store had become their sanctuary, the one place the felt safe in this post-apocalyptic world. Dusty, William, Samantha, Sarah, the latest member of the group, had transformed it into a fortified safehouse. A place where they could find temporary respite from the relentless hordes of the undead. Little did they know that their haven would soon be under attack.

They had seen things slowly changing over the past few weeks. The number of zombies they encountered continuously rising, the attacks getting closer and closer to the jewelry store. Then it happened.

It was a moonless night, the darkness enveloping the city like a shroud. The four of them were gathered inside the jewelry store, their senses heightened, as they knew that danger could strike at any moment. They had fortified the entrances with barricades and set up a system of alarms to alert them should they experience any approaching threats.

Suddenly, the silence was shattered by the sound of shuffling footsteps outside. Dusty, who had taken the first watch, peered through a crack in the barricade they had positioned near the window and saw a horde of zombies approaching. There were at least fifty of them, their vacant eyes fixed on the jewelry store, drawn by the faint scent of human flesh.

Dusty quickly woke the others, and they sprang into action. William and Samantha quickly dressed and armed themselves with swords, their blades gleaming in the dim light. Dusty was already prepared, he had grabbed his trusty sword and dagger, while Sarah was the fasted to react, jumping from her be she prepared herself with the speed and strength that complimented her zombie body.

They looked at each other, they didn't want the zombies to be able to break in so they decided to take the battle to them. Opening the door, the four rushed out to engage the zombies, trying to take advantage of their longer reach and greater intellect. As the first wave of zombies crashed against the outside barricades, the group fought back with a ferocity born of months of servival. William swung his sword with precision, severing limbs and decapitating the undead with each strike. Samantha, nimble and agile, danced through the ranks of the zombies, her sword slashing through the air with deadly accuracy.

Dusty and Sarah pushed forward from the entrance, unleashed a barrage of strikes upon their foes, each strike finding its mark and sending the undead sprawling to the ground. Sarah, with her enhanced strength and intelligence, used her knowledge of the undead to exploit their weaknesses. She targeted their heads, striking with deadly precision, again and again, ensuring that each zombie she encountered would not rise again.

The battle raged on, the jewelry store becoming a battleground of steel and claws. The air was thick with the stench of decay and the sound of moans and cries of the undead. But the four of them fought with a determination that could not be extinguished.

As the horde pressed closer, Dusty shouted for a retreat and come together, there were still many zombies and they needed to give each a chance to rest. Forming a circle they took turns standing in the center breathing deeply. Just a few minutes was all it would take. Of course, Sarah, being a a zombie, did not require a rest and continued to attack and protect the others. They knew that they could quickly regroup and find a strategic advantage to turn the tide in their favor.

Sarah, with her heightened senses, noticed a weak spot in the zombies positioning. She communicated this to the others, and they quickly devised a plan. William and Samantha would hold off the zombies while the other two would push through to the right and attack them from behind.

As the zombies continued to surge forward, the group fought with renewed vigor. William and Samantha swung their swords with precision, their blades slicing through the air and finding their targets. Dusty and Sarah moved through and reappeared at the back of the zombies. With the confusion of attacks from both sides it felt like they were getting the upper hand. The bodies began to pile up and the numbers of attacking zombies dropped.

The battle seemed endless, the minutes dragged onward. But slowly, the tide had began to turn. The group's relentless assault wore down the horde, their numbers dwindling with each passing moment. The zombies, driven by an insatiable hunger, fought with mindless determination, but they were no match for the skill and strategy of Dusty, William, Samantha, and Sarah.

Finally, as the last of the zombies fell to the ground, defeated, the four of them stood amidst the wreckage outside the jewelry store. Their bodies were battered and bruised, their clothes stained with blood and sweat. But there was a sense of triumph in their hearts, a feeling of accomplishment that came from knowing they had survived against all odds.

They had fought off the horde, defended their safehouse, and emerged victorious. The jewelry store, once a place of luxury and opulence, now stood as a symbol of their resilience and determination. They had turned it into a fortress, a stronghold against the relentless onslaught of the undead, and tonight they had shown why it was the place they called home.

As they surveyed the aftermath of the battle, they knew that their fight was far from over. The world outside was still filled with danger and uncertainty. But in that moment, they allowed themselves a brief respite, a moment of celebration for their hard-fought victory.

Sarah looked over to Dusty and quietly spoke, "I am going to take a look around."

Knowing the reason for her statement he looked at the other two, "You guys drag the bodies over to the other side away from our building and Sarah and I are going to do a quick scout around to make sure it is safe. To make it easier for you, I'll drag one with me."

William and Samantha nodded their agreement.

Dusty had known it was time for Sarah to feed. Although they others knew it was a reality of her being a zombie, they tried not to discuss it and they had never seen Sarah actually eat flesh. Dusty had seen it but it still wasn't anything he was comfortable with. He left the body for Sarah and looked away. "I'll take a look around," he said as he left her to her horrendous task.

A few minutes later Dusty heard Sarah's call. She walked over to him and they slowly walked back to the jewelry store side by side.

They had proven again that, even in the face of unimaginable horrors, humanity could prevail. And as they say the others sitting safely inside waiting for them they they knew that as long as they had each other and the weapons they wielded with skill and precision, they would continue to fight, to protect each other, and to defy the odds in this unforgiving world.
