Chapter 22 - chapter 22

"In the second round, it seems the tournament organizers decided to hold a single fight rather than multiple fights simultaneously, probably to sell more tickets. Since Sophie was already in the ring, she was up next for convenience. I headed to the spectator chair and sat down. It was a bit disappointing that she wasn't wearing a bikini, but since the bet was only for one round, she was dressed in normal clothes." Sophie and her opponent step into the Colosseum, and the fight begins. Sophie shrouds herself in Shadow and Darkness, creating a sword made of these elements. I'll just refer to them as Shadow and Darkness because it's unclear if she's using one or both. She appears to be fighting an opponent who specializes in melee combat, although he seems to be using fire magic to engulf himself in flames. It's currently popular to focus on melee combat rather than using magic. Some younger fighters typically wield swords or other weapons. I even spotted a guy with a giant axe. They're moving so fast that all I can see are afterimages, even with my mind sped up like this.

Sophie's affinities are space, shadow, and darkness. Basic magic incorporates every convenient spell, such as the cleaning spell, and is taught by the adventurous guild, making everyone's daily life easier. The only ones who can't learn magic are F ranks, but they still have mana so they can use magical weapons and tools. Sophie distances herself and uses the Gate of Babylon, unleashing a bunch of steel spears and swords that are enchanted to explode on contact. They're disposable weapons, as they're only made of steel. You can't use Gate of Babylon with a storage ring, even if it has a large amount of space inside. The cost of a storage ring increases based on the amount of space. You could use the storage ring to store a large number of weapons. However, she's making them track her opponent like a guided missile by manipulating space, which you cannot do with a storage ring. Her opponent is just incinerating all of the weapons before they can make contact with him and explode, but he's on the defensive. Since all Australians get their adventurer's licenses, only the F ranks are the only ones that can't use basic magic in the country. Most people have at least two affinities. Specializing in magic that you have an affinity for, it is going to be your most powerful type of magic and the one you'll take to like a fish takes to water. It's not that you can't use other types of magic, but even after thousands of years of training, you might not reach the same level as someone with an affinity for it. So, using magic you don't have an affinity for is typically to try catching an opponent off guard when used in combat, though poeple specialize in not one type of magic but all of the magic they have an affinity for. This is because monsters typically have a very strong resilience or are downright immune to one specific type of damage. For example, they might be immune to fire magic or highly resistant to them. In that case, you could just switch to a different type of magic or use composite magic, which is combining two or more different types of magic into one. For example, combining fire and wind into a flame tornado.

I only have one affinity, which is pretty rare since most people have 2 affinities. Since I have an affinity for composite magic, I can learn spells like molten ice. This would take a thousand years of training for a normal person to learn, as combining conflicting elements is extremely difficult if not downright impossible.

My mother also only has one affinity for lightning magic. People with one affinity are typically looked down upon since you can just get equipment that counters that specific type of magic and you'll have a huge advantage, especially against someone who is a mage specializing in fighting with magic. If they also specialize in physical combat, then it will be a bit more difficult to counter, but they're still seen as someone who can be easily beaten. Because I have an affinity for composite magic, I focused not on specialization but on learning as many different types of magic and how best to combine them. My mother, on the other hand, took people looking down on her as a challenge, and during her time in the hidden realm, she reached a level with her lightning magic that can no longer be considered lightning. Hell, even if she attacks someone immune to lightning, they would still die. Her lightning is no longer just lightning but pure concentrated power that simply resembles lightning. She took things to such an extreme that it's surpassed even lightning itself. The arena was engulfed in darkness, and I said, "That guy's fucked." A second later, the guy, covered in wounds and on the verge of death, emerges from the darkness. It's her Domain of Darkness, where she's basically an unkillable god. The downside is the mana consumption, which is quite nasty.
