"Y-You are a-a girl?!?" I stammered in disbelief.
The giant octopus before me seemed delighted with my reaction, a smug smile stretching across her face. She had long, ocean-blue hair and eyes as white as the moon. At just 5 feet tall, she looked like an angel—if only she wasn't strangling me to death right now.
"L-Let me go!" I managed to gasp, my voice strained with suppressed anger.
"We'll talk about letting you go later," she replied coolly. "First, I need to heal. Or would you prefer your bond to die?"
I grumbled internally, annoyed at how powerless I felt. "It's not like I can kill you anyways…"
Her grip around my neck tightened, and I could feel her frustration as her eyebrow twitched. Without warning, she swung me around, slamming me against the ocean floor repeatedly.
"Can she hear my thoughts?" I panicked. The thought of her potentially reading my mind was terrifying.
As she moved toward the coral house, I was dragged along by her tentacles. I was astonished at how she walked with such ease. I hadn't realized that bonded beings could share powers. It didn't matter who possessed the power first; the bond allowed the other to access it too.
Inside the house made of coral reefs, she tossed me onto a sofa before heading to a half-enclosed area with cooking utensils. I took a moment to massage my neck, feeling a mix of relief and discomfort.
"Give me a minute to clean myself up," she said. "If I come back and find you've escaped…"
Her threat was interrupted by the whistling sound of a kettle. She turned around and picked it up with one of her tentacles, bringing it into the room with her.
As the door slammed shut, I glanced around at the elegant, yet simple furnishings. The sofa I was sitting on seemed to be made from oversized seashells with cushions, and the room was decorated with unique, oceanic pieces.
Curious, I walked over to a stone tablet in the corner. It was pitch-black and about 5 feet long, with golden ink inscriptions that captivated me.
[ Far, far beneath the abysmal sea, lay a Kraken where even the faintest sunlight fleets.
Consuming huge sea worms even in its sleep, it lay in the shadow deep.
In this sea of stars, it glowed the brightest.
Like a burning candle, like an erupting volcano, like a blazing star…
It burnt, burnt until all it was left with was ashes.
An end wonderful, deciding upon the fate of the very cycle. It will burn, burn until one of them ends.
Until the fire shall heat the very deep, taking upon a massive leap…
In the water was it born and in water will it die, in the reflection of these waves, the sky itself shall cry…
An end wonderful, deciding upon the fate of the very cycle. It shall be the flames that sparked the apocalypse…
Until one of them ends! ]
I stood there, stunned by the grandeur of the words, contemplating their meaning.
"That's a nice piece of writing you've got there," the girl said as she entered the room, now dressed in a white dress that fell to her knees.
"This stone tablet is one of my ancestral keepsakes," she continued. "It's said to show a glimpse of one's future. What you see is my prophecy. Though, it's rumored that none of the prophecies have ever come true."
She paused, looking both proud and melancholic. "It has become a ritual for every heir of our race to shed a small amount of blood until the next child comes of age. But I am the last member of my now-extinct race. That's why you call me an overgrown octopus, unaware of the legendary origins of my race."
"Legendary origins?" I asked, my mind reeling.
"I belong to a race comparable to the Legendary Dragon and Phoenix. We were once known as 'The Kraken,'" she said, puffing her chest with pride.
I was stunned. There were other races besides humans and demons? Has everything I learned in high school been wrong?
Humans were not the only other race than demons? To top that off, those things people called 'myths and legends' might actually be true!
