Chapter 34 - Struggles for Control

POV - Caldwell

[Day 2, March 2002, 4pm]

Through the discreetly placed phone, I caught snippets of the conversation. "Minister Sara," a voice trembled, its uncertainty palpable even through the crackling transmission. "I... I assure you, I'll do everything in my power to ensure the report aligns with your expectations."

The shuffling of the phone's audio as I listened in through the phone, the weight of her words felt heavy in the air. "Commander," Sara pressed, her tone conveyed both authority and expectation. "I'm glad we understand each other. You will be handsomely rewarded for your cooperation."

There was a calculated pause before her voice took on a sinister edge. "I'm sure your sons will be proud of their father surviving the skirmish against terrorists."

As I heard what had transpired, Sara had just bribed, threatened and decided to contain the information, then she will come back and give us a sanitized version of the incident.

With each carefully chosen word and subtle insinuation, she planted seeds of compliance in Ahmed's mind. There was no room for refusal; the stakes were too high, the consequences too severe. Reinforcing the necessity of Ahmed's compliance.

The sound of footsteps echoed through the phone, indicating that the commander was on the move. Then, his voice came through the line, slightly breathless but clear. "Did you get all that?" he asked, his tone betraying a hint of uncertainty.

I listened intently, taking in every word, every nuance of his voice. It was crucial to confirm that our message had been received, that Ahmed understood the gravity of the situation. With a sense of satisfaction, I replied, "Yes, I got it. Thank you for your service Ahmed"

I hung up the phone before contemplating what to do with the information. My suspicions were aroused as I observed Sara's worried expression and hurried departure from the palace. It was a telltale sign that something was amiss, and I knew better than to ignore my instincts.

Thankfully, the system was still in place, ensuring that the Governor had access to his own communication network to receive news firsthand. It was a vital tool in times of uncertainty, allowing us to stay one step ahead of any potential threats or disruptions within our own ranks.

The Governor's muffled calls echoed through the corridors, drawing my attention from my current task. "Caldwell! Where are you?" his voice rang out, filled with excitement and anticipation. "You have to try this, come join us!"

"I'll be right there," I replied, my voice mirroring the excitement but my mind race with scenarios of how to tell this to the Governor. I made my way to the other room as he instructed. Taking my place beside him, I eagerly awaited the moment he would offer me a piece of Roti.

Taking a bite from the Roti, I was immediately struck by its enticing fragrance and the perfect balance of crunchiness and softness. It was a culinary delight unlike any other, and I couldn't help but savor each mouthful.

Turning to the Governor, I hoped to gently remind him of the urgent matters that required our attention but wouldn't want to sour the mood for him. "Governor," I began, my tone respectful yet firm, "please enjoy the food, how about we meet again upstairs study at 5pm?"

"That sounds good, Caldwell," the Governor replied, his tone indicating his agreement as he continued to enjoy his meal.

5PM

As the afternoon progressed and the clock struck 5PM, I ushered the Governor and Janick into his study upstairs, a room filled with books and past memorabilia, setting the stage for our serious discussion.

"Governor," I began, my voice grave with concern, "we have a developing issue with Defense Minister Sara and her army. I have informed all the other Ministers that the meeting will be continued tomorrow."

"Minister Sara?" he replied, "something was bound to happen as her troops are barely a day old and probably have no experience. So it should not be an issue. I think Sara will be an upstanding Minister and will tell us the truth."

I nodded, acknowledging the Governor's perspective, but feeling a sense of unease lingering in the air. "I understand your optimism, Governor," I replied, choosing my words carefully. "However, given what I have just learned an hour ago, the gravity of the situation is imperative and we should approach this with caution."

I paused, letting my words sink in before continuing. "I have just learned that there was a shooting at one of the checkpoints and it is Lady Sautereau's car."

I explained to the Governor that Lady Sautereau is unhurt and is being brought back to the Palace as of now. However it was how Minister Sara decided to frame the problem.

"What?!" the Governor sighs, "why was I not informed of this?! She threatened, bribed and corrupted what had happened."

It is my job to do what it takes to protect the Governor politically, regardless if it is from physical threats or even his own Ministers.

"I would do the same, Governor," I affirmed, echoing his sentiment. "This presents a strategic opportunity for both your career and the stability of our region. By framing the Insurgents as aggressors targeting a foundational pillar of our community, we not only protect our reputation but also strengthen our position politically."

I paused, allowing the weight of my words to settle before continuing. "We must take proactive measures to address this issue head-on. Anticipating and preparing for potential threats is far more effective than reacting after the fact. We cannot afford to be caught off guard in matters of such importance."

"The Minister's independent actions shows that she is proactive, however she could complicate matters further, especially if she proceeds without informing us. It's crucial that we maintain open lines of communication and coordinate our efforts to ensure that her actions align with our overall strategy."

I paused, allowing the gravity of the situation to sink in before continuing. "We cannot afford to be blindsided by her decisions. We must take proactive steps to monitor her movements and stay informed of her plans, even if it means exercising discretion in our approach."

"Rest assured, Governor," I added "I will keep a close eye on the situation and ensure that we remain one step ahead of any potential complications arising from the Minister's actions."
