"Well you better hold them back, because I don't think I could turn back now even if I wanted to," Kenji roared as his personal tsunami started to pick up speed rapidly closing the distance. Time seemed to come to a crawl as far below him Kenji could see the small stampede of people fleeing from the collapsing skyscraper and falling pieces of debris clutching their daughters and sons and what little valuables they couldn't afford to part with emotionally.

Kenji didn't know if he was going delusional from the pain, but he could feel their desperation, despair and agony. It rolled of the group in waves and each one hit Kenji like a physical blow making his body tremble and shake as his skin started to crack like porcelain letting a dull purple light shine through.

[Kenji your body is beginning to unravel, you've done too much too soon, at this rate you won't even reach them in time before your soul is consumed.]

'Then at least that brimstone bastard won't get his claws on me.' Kenji responded with a calm voice as the pain radiating through his body faded into background noise.

[You don't seem to understand, your soul will be torn to pieces. This is something that not even the gods would wish on their greatest heretics. It is considered the worst fate imaginable, there are myths that the single instant between existence and absolution stretches on for eons as your soul is torn to shreds piece by piece.]

For a long moment Kenji was silent, he wasn't some hero with a heart of gold that would sacrifice himself for the greater good. He was a selfish man who had wasted his first life in debauchery accomplishing nothing and had been stupid and foolish enough to think that he of all people deserved a second chance to live a personal fantasy.

'I don't think I deserve eternal damnation…but those people certainly don't deserve to die like this, they didn't have a choice and they didn't ask for this.'

[What does it matter, most would have only lived a handful of decades! You would have had the chance to become something more than a mere mortal!]

Zurx shouted with enough force to make Kenji's mind vibrate, but the eldritch beings' fury didn't sway Kenji, 'I just want to do one decent thing with my life.'

Zurx fell silent for a moment before a long rumbling sigh.

[Then I guess there is no other option.]

Kenji was about to reply when he felt his perspective shift. All of sudden his view changed as Kenji was brought back into his soul space but everything had changed.

The infinite white void was now riddled with massive cracks that bled with a sickly purple light, 'Why did you bring me here?'

[Because I wanted you to bear witness]

A ripple passed through Kenji's soul and he felt a space warp like water being displaced but on a scale greater than Kenji could even imagine. In the blink of an eye Kenji's soul went from being a star to the center of everything to a tiny speck as a massive blackhole appeared with a single red point at the very center.

'That's your soul isn't it?'

[Yes…yes it is.]

'I can see why Lucifer called you a glutton. Your soul needs to lose some weight.'

[I can not deny my nature, but perhaps I won't need to any longer.]

'What are you talking about?'

[Even though I am beyond the reach of time and space I am not immortal, to be immortal is to be static, confined to your nature and never seeking more or wishing to grow and change as a being. For a long time I thought I was immortal, but now I see that I was only lethargic. You've made me see that and gave me a chance to do something I never thought possible]

'This is starting to sound dangerously like a speech the larger than life/mentor character would give to the protagonist on their deathbed after sacrificing themselves for said protagonist after they did something stupid.'

[I won't die, not truely, at this point I am more of a concept than an actual living beginning. ]

'So what's about to happen?'

[Truly I only have the vaguest idea. Your soul and mine will become a singular entity, which also means our bond will cease to exist. The power you wield now will be beyond your reach potentially forever and you'll be back to where you started now as a proper being of the abyss.]

'Are you sure this is the only way?'

[Yes, but I have already explained I won't be dying in the mortal sense]

'Still feels like you're dying.'

[Then goodbye Kenji, I'll be watching.]

Kenji watched as the event horizon of Zurx's soul disappeared leaving behind a single red dot so small that it was contained to a single point in space and time. Then like a flare the dot flew across the void and struck Kenji's soul sending ripples across its surface.

Then all at once Kenji was back in his body screaming as his body tore itself apart atop of a massive wave of abyss. But now Kenji could feel his control of the substance slipping and the fundamental changes in his soul quickly stealing away the bit of consciousness he had managed to cling onto.

With one final monumental effort Kenji clapped his hands together before pulling them apart, opening a portal in the wave of the abyss. The deathly rattle of a thousand chains echoed through the air as they poured forth slithering through the air and seeking out a target.

The chains varied in size, some were the size of fishing line, others could be used to drop anchor for massive cargo ships. Kenji watched as the horde of chains wrapped around the falling pieces of debris pulled them out of the air and back into the portal.

That was the last thing Kenji saw before his eyes closed leaving him to a fate that not even the gods knew.
