Chapter 29 - Pep Talk

Once Kenji and Uraraka introduced themselves they were pulled to their respective groups, Uraraka with the girls and Kenji with the boys. Of course no one literally grabbed them and took them aside, but societal norms were sometimes just as compelling.

Fortunately for Kenji there were far more outgoing personalities among the boys than him, meaning the conversation was carried mostly without his input, which was fine with him.

"Alright everyone shut up and sit down!!"

All conversation in the room stopped as a large yellow sleeping bag plopped through the doorway. The person inside unzipped the bag and stepped out revealing a middle aged man with a scraggly beard and long unkempt hair.

"What is everyone looking at, I said sit down!" The man stared the room down, shocking them into action as everyone moved to find their seat.

Once everyone was settled the man walked to the front of the room and faced the class, "I am your homeroom teacher you may call me Sensei Aizawa or just Sensei. While some of you may want to become heroes for fame, wealth, or to simply carry out the family legacy. There is only one type of hero that will be graduating from my class…those who would sacrifice their body, mind and ideals to make sure not a single monster breaches our dear city. If at any point I believe you lack the potential to reach my standards I will not hesitate to kick you out of my class. Am I understood?"

The class was silent but Aizawa seemed satisfied and he continued, "Which is why I'm glad that the Academy decided to fully adopt its motto of raising the best. As all of you are aware each student will be given a monthly allowance of Alpha Materials in order to accelerate the process of quirk evolution.

But what you all should be concerned about is the class and year rankings. I assure you that the bonuses given to those who show promise are worth your effort.

Which brings me to my most important point, the fact that each and everyone of you has been placed in Class 1-A. The reason why the admission results took so long this year was that me and my colleagues personally reviewed every single admitted applicant and determined the potential of their quirk."

A hand shot up in the air and everyone turned to stare at Momo Yaoyorozu in the back of the class.

"Ms. Yaoyorozu, you have something to say?" Aizawa asked, his voice flat, but not hostile.

"Yes, how did you and the other teachers determine our potential was greater than others? While some quirks may inherently be more powerful, through evolution and awakening even the most mundane quirks can prove invaluable." Momo responded proudly with a straight forward face.

Dipping his head Aizawa acknowledged Momo's point, "Correct you are Ms. Yaoyorozu, every quirk has potential and it is up to the user to draw it out. Which is why for the application process we simply imagined the most powerful version of the applicant's quirk."

A murmur passed through the class and Kenji couldn't help but furrow his brow trying to figure out if there was some secret meaning behind Aizawa's words.

After a second the teacher raised his hand and the class fell silent, "Since there is some confusion let me elaborate. How many are you familiar with my quirk?"

There was a brief pause before Kenji, Todoroki, Momo and Midoriya's hands rose into the air.

Aizawa nodded not unsurprisingly, "Well for the rest of you who don't, the name of my quirk is Erasure. When I first awakened I could cancel the quirk of anything I could see as long as I kept my eyes open.

A collective wave of shock passed through the room as Aizawa revealed his quirk, "Now I want you all to imagine how powerful my quirk would be if I only evolved once."

A hushed quiet fell over the room as everyone lost themselves to thought, "The same principle was applied to this year's applicants, though I assure you with far more discussion and calculation."

Scraping his eyes across the room Aizawa grunted, "In the end you twenty were determined to have the most potential among your peers, and while that might just seem like bragging rights. It will have profound effects when it comes to the public's gaze, and when you become eligible for internships with agencies and pro-heroes.

That also means in more ways than one you all are in direct competition with each other, those same opportunities are going to look at who's standing in the number one spot. Number two, they'll settle for, three who knows. And while some of you may think it's impossible for you to reach the top, hear me now.

Natural talent will always be beaten by time and effort.

The degree to which and time it takes your quirk to evolve is determined almost solely by your state of mind. As a part of your biology your quirk is inherently linked with your emotions and will respond during times of duress and stress, either during intense training or in the heat of battle.

Which is why for the first week of the school all first year classes will be participating in an intense quirk evaluation program. The limits of your quirk will be tested by qualified staff such as myself in order to determine your limits and to create personalized training regiments to accelerate your growth.

When the program concludes the first class tournaments will be held in order to establish rank."

The class erupted with hushed whispers and side glances as all at once everyone was reminded that the person sitting next to them may well be their opponent in a few days.

Letting the chaos continue, Aizawa raised his voice as he spoke, "You all have fifteen minutes to change into your gym uniforms and make your way to training hall A. Fail to do so and you will be dismissed for the day."
