Chapter 5 - Let's Go Shopping

Toga tapped her feet nervously on the bus the entire way to the mall, and it would have been cute if Kenji hadn't known the seed of her anxiety. The way her hand tightened into a death grip any time a middle-aged man passed them made Kenji want to kick down her father's door and beat him within an inch of her life.

'Maybe when I awaken my quirk,' Kenji mused to himself with a slight smile just as the bus stopped.

Looking out the window, Kenji grinned at the massive shopping complex, "Alright, this is us."

Kenji stood up before turning around and offering his hand to Toga, who wordlessly took it and followed him off the bus, "You know you don't need to take me shopping, just to make me feel better."

Flashing her another smile, Kenji continued, undeterred towards the main entrance, "While making you happy is a benefit, I also need to buy some stuff for my place. So we can skip it if you don't feel like it."

Toga stared at him before pouting with a slight frown on her face, "Fine."

Shaking his head, Kenji let Toga have the last word as they entered the mall alongside a surge of people. Kenji's mouth gaped at the scale of the shopping center, stopping him in his tracks, "We're going to need a map."

----

"And I think that's the last store," Kenji announced with a massive smile, supporting three shopping bags on each arm.

"Does that mean we can finally go now?" Toga whined as she limped behind him, her eyes filled with boredom.

Rolling his eyes, Kenji adjusted his commercial burden before reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone," Nope, we have one last stop but don't worry, I think you're going to enjoy this one."

Toga mumbled something under her breath but followed nonetheless as Kenji strode off, undaunted by her negative attitude.

After a short walk, Kenji stopped in front of a pink and white storefront with the delicate smell of perfume wafting out from within.

Toga looked from the woman's clothing shop to Kenji with a strange expression on her face, "You lied."

Kenji shrugged, "I don't like seeing you in a bad mood. Is that such a crime?"

Toga adverted her eyes nervously as she hugged her arms to her chest, "Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean a new wardrobe and makeup will make everything sunshine and rainbows."

"Oh my god, would you just shut up and go shopping!" Kenji exclaimed with another exaggerated roll of his eyes, "Even if you don't enjoy it, you can't keep wearing my t-shirts and running shorts."

Toga stared at Kenji for a long moment before walking wordlessly into the store.

Following her, Kenji watched as Toga hesitated for a second before randomly picking a direction.

Arriving at the first rack of clothes, Toga paused before reaching for a frilly white blouse. After feeling the fabric between her fingers, Toga went to check the tag, only for Kenji to speak up.

"Don't worry about the price. I can cover it," he assured with a confident smile. In fact, I forbid you from looking at the tag."

Toga opened her mouth to object but decided fighting me wasn't worth it and took the blouse off the rack.

After walking through the store, Toga accrued an armful of clothes that she went to try on in the changing room.

Waiting outside the stall, Kenji dropped his heavy load of shopping bags with a relieved sigh, 'This is going to be embarrassing.'

Ignoring his burning cheeks, Kenji dropped to the floor and started doing push-ups, 'No one's watching, no one's watching.'

Repeating the mantra in his head, Kenji went up and down until he heard the door click as it swung open.

"Why are you doing push-ups?"

Kenji jumped to his feet and cleared his throat. "You know I'm just training for... woah."

Kenji's words died in his throat as he looked Toga up and down. Replacing her oversized t-shirt, Toga was now wearing a plaid skirt, a blue cropped shirt, and the first white blouse she had chosen draped across her shoulders.

A heavy blush spread across Toga's face, and she fidgeted with the hem of her dress, "Pervert."

Realizing he was staring, Kenji struggled to recover from the sight, "S-sorry, you just caught me off guard."

Toga didn't say anything, but the corners of her lips twitched up in a smile before she dipped back into the changing room.

Shaking his head, Kenji let out a held breath, 'Nearly gave me a heart attack, and she's not even a healthy weight yet.'

Kenji's mind wandered off for a moment, imagining Toga wearing the same outfit but with pillowy thighs and a massive chest. Shaking his head before the rest of his body could react to the daydream, Kenji was about to start working out again when the changing room door swung open again.

'That was quick. I wondered what Toga decided on this....time.'

Kenji's thoughts trailed off as white static filled the empty space.

Staring up at him, Toga had a devilish gleam in her eyes as she cocked her hip to the side, "So...what do you think?"

"..." Kenji was still in stunned silence as he stared at Toga's outfit, a pair of daisy duke bottoms with pockets sticking out from the hem and a tiny crop top with a slit cut out in the middle revealing a hint of skin.

"It looks....nice, "Kenji managed lamely as his brain rebooted.

Toga broke into an unabashed smile for the first time since they met, revealing her teeth with sharpened canines. Staring at her, Kenji felt his embarrassment melt away as he smiled.

"Do you think I should try on another one?" Toga asked almost teasingly, and Kenjo nodded, hopefully not too eagerly. With a soft giggle, Toga dipped back inside the changing stall.

Grinning, Kenji could help but get excited about what Toga might try on next, 'I'm one lucking son of a bitch.'
