Chapter 26 - Never number 1

"You guys…" Lucky yawned as he idled in the corner of the garage while Terenei and Jehnid worked tirelessly. He squinted his eyes to avoid the sparks from Terenei's welding.

"... so diligent," he continued, wiping the little tears from the corner of his eyes. "Don't tell me you'll stay up all night? That's not good if you're coming with me tomorrow."

Again, no one answered him.

Lucky sighed, wondering why he was still here in the first place. Terenei and Jehnid never talked once they got into the garage. Even if they were, they were short and relevant exchanges. Even so, Lucky could see the teamwork between the two of them.

[Don't overstep because soon, that Visitor will leave for the Metro and you two will be back to where you were.]

'That blonde is not wrong, though.' Lucky cocked his head back, gazing at the high roof. 'I'll leave for the Metro after I finish reading that damn book. Also, once I get enough experience in this place to unlock whatever privileges I could.'

'Inventory,' he thought and the screen automatically hovered over his face. 'Skill cooldown.'

Lucky stared at the countdown.

'Tomorrow, I'll finally see what kind of random skill I was given.'

Yet, he didn't feel any sense of excitement or any of the sort. This system screwed him over and over seconds after he came into this world. So, if there was anything he was looking forward to this skill was that it would give him some sort of peace of mind. If he finds out that his skill is useless, he could easily let this little hope go.

'Now that I think about it, wasn't I a delivery man?' Lucky mentally moved the screen and checked his profile. It showed his name, class, level, and stats. Underneath his name was written, [Delivery man].

What was that supposed to mean?

No matter how he racked his head about it, he couldn't think of anything. Hence, he shook his head and pulled his head back to check Terenei and Jehnid. Those two hadn't had dinners and because of that, Lucky also forgot to eat.

"Hey, I'm going to the…" he trailed off as he caught the mute by the entrance of the garage. Squinting his eyes, he caught the tray the mute was carrying.

"My lady!" Terenei, who couldn't be disturbed three seconds ago, took off his goggles. His face instantly brightened up when he saw the mute. He rushed to her, thinking she had come to see him.

"My lady, what are you doing here?"

The mute smiled and lifted the tray to make him notice. When Terenei gazed down, his face softened.

"Did you bring me food because you thought we hadn't had dinner?" he asked and she nodded, making him cover his lips with the back of his hand. "My lady, will you marry me?"

The mute smiled brightly, moving the tray closer to him.

"Do not worry, My Lady. We will eat this with a grateful heart!" Terenei swore with all his heart before he ushered her inside. "Come in. We're just working on Rex. You want to see it?"

"Hey, Jehnid! My future wife came here to bring us food! Get out of the booth and thank her!" he added as they went to where Lucky was. That was the spot where they usually eat, after all.

With that, Terenei offered to help the mute to prepare the table. However, she simply touched his arm with the back of her hand and shook her head. Although she couldn't speak, Terenei understood her very well. Hence, he let her prepare the food she brought while he went to wash his hands.

"He likes you," said Lucky as he watched the mute organize the table. "You should marry him."

The mute just looked at him helplessly and then smiled. At the same time, Jehnid joined them and sat down. He looked up at the woman Terenei was hitting on earlier today.

"Had you been watching us work?" he asked her, and the mute nodded. "I see. Thanks."

Lucky darted his eyes between Jehnid and the mute. His eyes then veered to Terenei, who was walking back to join them.

"Now that I think about it, there's only two of you in this garage?" Lucky asked when everyone was seated around the small folding table. "Didn't you say this is an entire department?"

Jehnid glanced at Lucky and ate first before answering the question. "Who would want to join this department when there are other departments? Departments that do bigger things?"

"So, it's just the two of you, huh?"

"This garage didn't exist initially," said Terenei while chewing, smiling at the mute, who was now an apple in his eyes. "We used to work in the engineering department. Jehnid on the research team and I on the mechanical team. That blonde earlier is Jehnid's colleague."

"That guy?" Lucky scrunched up his nose, still not touching his food.

"Mhm." Terenei leaned against the table as he added, "He called himself the best, but he was never number 1 when Jehnid was there."

"Terenei," called Jehnid. "Let's not bring him up. That guy is just a waste of space. It's wasteful to even think of him."

Lucky propped his jaw with his knuckles, darting his eyes between the two. "Tell me about him."

"Huh?"

"That blonde," said Lucky. "What kind of wasteful trash is he?"

"Hahaha! What did you say? Those fools are still on it?" Norton, the blonde man from the gatekeeper's engineer, laughed out loud. "Terenei and that stupid Jehnid. Did they really think their works are better than ours?!"

Two of his lackeys sneered as they spoke one after another.

"Even with the Visitors backing them up, those two will always be at the bottom of the ladder."

"That is right. They can spend all night prepping their battle mobile, but they won't do anything."

Norton hissed, raising his chin as he gazed at the beautiful battle suit before him. "Those idiots… they just don't know when to give up."

"Norton, whatever they are —"

"This is a good chance to teach those idiots a lesson," Norton cut off his lackey mid-sentence, eyes on the suit.

The lackeys looked at each other, reading through the lines and all too familiar with his tone.

"The chief is thinking that there's a huge potential in that garage if used right," said Norton in a grim tone. "And until the Visitor is here, they would keep deploying him with Rex and those idiots."

"But Norton, that was just a fluke!" His lackey reasoned nervously. "There's no way they could clear out areas without the suits' help."

"That's right. They're just wasting their time!"

Norton glared daggers at them. "Are you forgetting that a Visitor is assisting them? Although he doesn't look any special like that useless Nero, Visitors have more luck in this world. I don't want to take chances, especially when the chief decides to fund that wasteful garage. He has to cut down some budgets from other departments. I'm not delaying my research for them."

"Make sure they won't be able to go anywhere tomorrow. Better yet, make sure they won't be able to do anything at all." The corner of his mouth stretched from ear to ear, eyes glinting malevolently. "If they keep failing, that Visitor will eventually lose interest. He's not going to stay here. We might as well make sure he leaves earlier."
