Stages of Infomia
Infomia does not strike without warning, and the process of succumbing to it follows a terrifyingly predictable pattern.
1. Initial Onset (The Drift):
• Victims often experience an overwhelming sense of mental fatigue, a hazy disconnect from reality, and vivid dreams.
• They report hearing voices or seeing fleeting images—creatures or entities that seem to beckon them into sleep.
• Symptoms include prolonged drowsiness, emotional instability, paranoia, and a gradual inability to differentiate between the real world and the dreamscape.
2. The Descent (Deep Slumber):
• As the victim succumbs to Infomia, they fall into a state of unbroken sleep, their body still but their mind active and trapped in the dreamscape and nightmare realms.
• While their body shows no signs of illness beyond sleep, their mind is subjected to unimaginable horrors.
• Doctors have been able to maintain life support for many, but no effort can wake the victims. They remain in a permanent vegetative state, some surviving for decades without aging, while others mysteriously perish after a few weeks or months.
3. Awakening (The Returned):
• A small fraction of those afflicted by Infomia manage to awaken, though the reasons for this are still unknown.
• These survivors, known as The Returned, wake up with their minds fractured by their experiences. They often speak in cryptic riddles or disturbing imagery, recounting their time in the nightmare realm.
• Physically, The Returned appear gaunt, with dark circles under their eyes and significant muscle atrophy from their time spent asleep.
• Mentally, many show signs of deep trauma—extreme paranoia, hallucinations, irrational fears, and emotional numbness. Some become violent or psychotic, incapable of reintegrating into society.
Side Effects & Symptoms
Infomia not only traps the victims in a psychological hellscape but also leaves lasting effects on the survivors, both physical and mental:
• Mental Fragmentation:
Survivors often suffer from dissociative states, where they cannot separate their memories from the nightmare world and reality. They may confuse everyday objects with the horrors they encountered.
• Sleep Paralysis:
Waking victims frequently suffer from extreme cases of sleep paralysis. In these states, they become hyper-aware of the transition between the waking world and the nightmare realm. Some even believe they are still trapped in the nightmare.
• Neurological Deterioration:
Those affected by Infomia, even briefly, show long-term neurological damage. Many develop epilepsy, migraines, and hypersensitivity to light and sound. Hallucinations are common, with sufferers reporting visions of the nightmare realm while awake.
• Psychotic Breakdowns:
The mental toll of surviving Infomia often leads to psychotic episodes, wherein survivors react violently to perceived threats. They develop obsessive behaviors, particularly centered around preventing sleep, fearing a return to the nightmare realm.
• Physical Decay:
As the mind is trapped in the alternate dimension, the body begins to slowly deteriorate. The longer one remains in Infomia, the more pronounced the physical effects become: loss of muscle mass, brittle bones, organ dysfunction, and a near-skeletal appearance.
The Three Realms Within Infomia
The world within the minds of those affected by Infomia is divided into three distinct realms, each playing a different role in the mental landscape of the afflicted:
1. The Waking World:
• The familiar world we all live in. However, for those experiencing Infomia, their connection to the waking world becomes tenuous, as though viewed through a fog. Victims often find it difficult to remember or interact with reality as they fall deeper into the sleep.
2. The Dreamscape:
• A realm of unfiltered imagination, where desires, fantasies, and ambitions manifest as tangible landscapes and beings. Initially beautiful and serene, this world quickly becomes dangerous, as even innocent dreams can turn into twisted, dark versions of themselves. The longer someone stays in the dreamscape, the more difficult it becomes to resist its pull, as it seduces the mind into indulging in its creations.
3. The Nightmare Realm:
• The heart of the Infomia phenomenon. A horrifying dimension where the darkest fears, regrets, and sins of the sleeper come to life. This world is governed by chaos, with no logic or consistency to its rules. The nightmare realm is a reflection of humanity's collective fears and destructive tendencies, where everything is hostile and survival is near impossible.
• Those who return from Infomia speak of unspeakable horrors, grotesque creatures, and landscapes that defy reason. Time behaves erratically here, with some describing months of torment in what was, in reality, only a few hours of sleep.
Theories and Research
Despite years of study, there is no consensus on what causes Infomia. However, several theories have emerged:
1. Psychological Manifestation:
Some theorize that Infomia is a manifestation of collective human fears and anxieties. The rapid advancement of technology, social disconnect, and environmental collapse have created a mental strain that results in a mass psychosomatic condition, trapping individuals in their subconscious.
2. Alternate Dimension:
Another theory suggests that Infomia is not a disease but a side effect of an unseen tear between dimensions. Victims are believed to be mentally transported to another plane of existence, where time and reality bend in ways that our world cannot comprehend.
3. Parasitic Entity:
A more disturbing theory posits that an alien, parasitic entity might be responsible for Infomia. This entity feeds off human consciousness, using the dreamscape and nightmare realms as a form of sustenance, while leaving its victims in a permanent state of sleep.
Now onto the power system, it's in the works right now so bare with it, and hopefully it makes sense!
Power System: Ambition Dynamics
In the realms of dreams, nightmares, and the dreamscape itself, the power system functions as a reflection of one's inner self: emotions, mental fortitude, and psychological resilience. This unique system is tied directly to the state of the mind, where everything—strength, power, and survival—is determined by a person's ability to confront their own ambitions and inner fears.
Ambition Ignition
The key to unlocking power in the dreamscape is to discover and ignite one's Ambition. An Ambition is a deeply personal goal, desire, or drive that defines a person's existence. It is born from their core emotions—whether it be hope, anger, fear, love, or even despair. Without an Ambition, a person remains powerless in the dreamscape, vulnerable to the horrors of the nightmare realm.
• What is Ambition?
Ambition is the driving force behind the individual's power. It could be the desire to return to the waking world, protect someone, conquer fear, or simply survive. Once ignited, the Ambition shapes the individual's powers and abilities in the dreamscape.
• Ambition Trigger
To ignite Ambition, one must face a pivotal moment where their desire becomes clear and undeniable. It may occur during a traumatic experience or an epiphany of purpose. In this moment, the Ambition takes shape, marking the start of one's path to power.
Stat Manifestation: The Markings
Unlike typical game-like power systems with status windows, the power within the dreamscape manifests visually on the body. Each person's stats appear as Markings—symbols, numbers, letters, or ratios—that spread across different parts of the body. These markings are unique to each individual and reflect their mental and emotional state.
• Strength (STG):
Symbolized by bold numbers or letters that stretch across the arms, indicating physical prowess and raw power. The more intense the ambition and the stronger the mental resilience, the larger and clearer these numbers appear.
• Durability (DUR):
This stat manifests along the legs or spine, often shown as a set of interconnected symbols that grow in complexity. Durability reflects how much pain or trauma a person can endure in the dreamscape, both mentally and physically.
• Vitality (VTL):
Vitality appears as a pulse-like pattern across the chest or neck, symbolizing one's emotional drive and resilience to mental breakdowns. A high Vitality indicates a person's ability to recover from damage or emotional trauma in the dreamscape.
• Agility (AGI):
Shown as sleek, streamlined markings on the legs or shoulders, agility reflects the ability to react swiftly in moments of danger and navigate the unpredictable world of the dreamscape.
• Mental Fortitude (MTF):
A vital stat in the dreamscape, this manifests as intricate runes on the temples or forehead. Mental fortitude determines the clarity of the mind, the ability to resist illusions, and how well a person can remain grounded in the face of terrifying horrors or mind-bending situations.
• Focus (FCS):
Focus often appears on the palms or fingertips, with numbers or symbols that represent concentration. High focus allows individuals to harness their power with precision, control their Ambition effectively, and even manipulate the environment of the dreamscape.
The Hidden Stats and Abilities
Within the markings, certain aspects of the power system remain mysterious. Some markings, though subtle or dormant, indicate hidden abilities or potential that lie beneath the surface of one's power. These hidden stats can only be unlocked through intense emotional experiences, growth, or conquering particularly dangerous nightmares.
• Hidden Abilities:
Some may have symbols or numbers that seem insignificant at first glance, but in critical moments, these reveal rare abilities—such as temporary invulnerability, enhanced vision, or the power to manipulate aspects of the dreamscape itself.
• Nightmare Imprints:
Occasionally, individuals bear additional markings known as Nightmare Imprints. These are residual scars left from particularly harrowing experiences in the nightmare realm. They may increase certain stats while simultaneously placing limits on others, reflecting the mental toll of unresolved fears or traumas.
Conquering Dreams and Nightmares: The Path to Power
True strength in the dreamscape comes from conquering one's own dreams and nightmares. This means not only confronting personal fears and ambitions but mastering them.
• Dream Conquest:
In the dreamscape, desires and fantasies become powerful forces. To grow stronger, an individual must confront their desires without being consumed by them. By overcoming their inner temptations, they gain control over their powers and can use their desires to fuel their Ambition.
• Nightmare Conquest:
The most dangerous path to power is through confronting one's darkest fears. The nightmare realm constantly challenges the individual with horrors pulled from their subconscious. Surviving these terrors and conquering them allows the person to unlock new abilities, increase their stats, and fortify their Ambition.
Growth and Power Scaling
The path to growth in the dreamscape is not linear. Power scaling is tied to emotional and psychological development, meaning growth happens when individuals confront deeper fears or resolve hidden desires.
• Ambition Advancement:
Ambitions can evolve. A simple desire to survive might grow into a quest for power, a need to protect others, or a drive to understand the dreamscape. As the Ambition advances, so do the person's abilities, allowing them to reshape their markings and unlock hidden potential.
• The Dream's Influence:
The dreamscape itself is not static. The deeper one ventures into it, the more the world reshapes around them based on their Ambition and fears. Those with strong enough minds can influence the environment, shaping it into an extension of their abilities.
The Power System in Action
• Marking Recognition: Upon entering the dreamscape, individuals are first drawn to their markings, often inspecting and deciphering their meaning. The location and design of the markings reveal what attributes they possess and where their potential lies.
• Battle and Growth: As individuals face other dreamers or creatures from the nightmare realm, they must rely on their stats—imbued by their mental state. In battle, it's not just physical combat but a clash of wills. Power fluctuates based on confidence, mental clarity, and emotional stability. A moment of hesitation could reduce agility or strength, while a surge of adrenaline might boost vitality or durability.
• Ambition Resurgence: Those who survive the dreamscape and conquer their nightmares experience an evolution of their powers. Their Ambition becomes more pronounced, their markings grow more detailed, and hidden abilities surface, granting them an edge in further challenges.
