Chapter 40 - Light hearted banter

Kissenn woke up. Her head pounded for some reason, drawing an instinctive wince as her first action in the "morning". "Tsc, did I hit my head or something?"

Her second action was to complain, and her third was to search for Ellianor who was nowhere to be seen inside his room. Kissenn narrowed her eyes.

She was up at the drop of a needle and with her sword by her side.

'I can go and bath later. First, find that doofus and see if he is okay.' Ellianor for some reason had an inkling to get hurt.

If only she knew how right she was. Kissenn wandered back to the living room, where she found her usual suspect. He slept, blankets covering his body.

The TV was lit, playing something as Ellianor slept. She walked over to the TV and saw that it was… some type of video with Aur's people in it. "What were you doing here?"

Ellianor slept silently, almost still as a corpse, but he was just sleeping.

Kissen saw the movement of his chest as he slept, it was a good sight that nothing bad happened to him during the night.

"I see you are awake. We will be making landfall on the Scrapyard in a few hours. I suggest you get ready, and wake him up so both of you are in your top shape."

An annoying voice called her in, and Kissen looked at her with disdain on her face. Aur was there, her smile as blank as ever. "Seriously? We have a few hours yet, let him rest."

Bothering someone in their sleep was too cruel, and she was not fond of just bothering her friend. "Those hours that could be spent betterning yourselves and getting ready."

Aur had the answer to Kissenn's words on the tip of her tongue. "Now is the time to work, not relax. You both will be debriefed on the true content of our mission when we make landfall."

They entered a contest of stares, their eyes locked on each other.

"Have you not told us the true contents of our mission?" Kissenn's voice had an edge to it.

Her heart raced as they kept staring at each other. "Of course not. It was a mission that would only be told once we reached the Scrapyard. Even I don't have the details of it, exactly."

Aur continued to smile, with no emotion or thought behind her eyes. It was the sentiment that something was wrong with the older woman, that she somehow was wrong.

Her empty red eyes and porcelain smile tickled Kissenn the wrong way. How could someone have no emotion or thought behind her eyes? "Yet why rush things? We have hours, don't we?"

They could wait and enjoy a bit of rest before returning to the usual schedule of madness and combat. "You never know when you are going into combat, or when it will come for you."

She walked past her, deeper into the corridors of the spaceship. "Bitch." Kissenn resisted the urge to spit as Aur walked past her.

Ellianor opened one eye, struggling to open the other as he stretched. "Hi… Kissenn, it is already morning? The spaceship lights are on." He smiled, not a bit of uneasiness in him.

The black-haired woman grimaced. "Sorry about waking you up. It was not my intention" If she had her way, he would be sleeping by now, and sleepeing soundly.

Ellianor crooked his head to the side. "Oh? No problem. I got a nice night of sleep so it is not all that bad." He yawned, before staring at the TV. The series was running. "Damn."

He did not know at what episode he slept. That would make it problematic to accompany it later on. "What a drag." Ellianor sighed, throwing the blanket to the side as he got up.

Kissenn pouted. "What you were watching on the TV? What did Aur give you to watch, anyway?"

She was not a fan of them interacting, but if she was more amicable to him when she was not around, good.

"Oh, a teenager drama of her planet. It is… an interesting watch, that much is sure." Ellianor scratched his sin, his memories recalling the events of the drama, and how her people were more dolphins than humans, in almost all regards.

"The rollercoaster goes very high and drags you to the depths of hell, that much I can guarantee." Aliens would be aliens, that was something Ellianor should keep in mind.

Kissenn raised an eyebrow, before staring at the TV again, more intensely. "Did you watch a damn series without me? Have you gone crazy? Did you forget your self-preservation instincts?"

Before Ellianor could properly react, Kissenn was upon him, her hands over his shoulder with a deadlock, her fingertips sinking in his flesh, drawing sharp whines from the black-haired man.

"We are friends. How could you go and watch a series, go to have fun while little old me slept, you were watching some series with that bitch and eating snacks? I'm sure you eat them."

Her grip only tightened, and Ellianor's face became purple with fear and pain, for some reason, she could hurt him badly with a touch, even if it did no damage. 'I escaped a lion to fall to a wolf's den.'

The corners of Kissenn's face trembled, her eyes wide, staring into his soul. "And here I was worrying about you. You have betrayed me and allied yourself to her."

Kissen got her face closer, her hot breath and the faux smile of anger she kept on her face sent a chill down his spine.

Ellianor trembled with fear. "Hey, I can explain, I can explain, I swear!"

"The betrayer can rationalize all betrayal, but only the betrayed feel the knife on their back." She drove her face over his shoulder, her hot breath on his neck.

"You better make amends, because I won't forget this slightly." Her voice broke into laughter, she could no longer keep the intimidating persona without laughing. Her grip was released.

Ellianor joined in the light-hearted laugh.
