Ava's eyes were closed as she braced herself for the gunshots she expected to end her life. Her breathing came in gasps as she waited for death.
Liam looked at her closed eyes and winked at the mock kidnappers to stand down. He moved to stand protectively between them and Ava.
"I don't think she meant that, please don't be rash, please I am sorry about that, it is on me..." Liam pleaded calmly.
Ava opened one eye and saw Liam shielding her from the men. He was willing to risk himself for her safety. She stared at him in awe, stunned by such selfless courage from someone she'd written off as just another cad.
"Mind your words, you might not be this fortune next time am I clear about that? We'll wait until the ransom is paid," the leader growled. "But if her family fails, consider her fate sealed by then your pleadings will mean nothing to me."
