Chereads / Frieren: The Dark Mage's Diary / Chapter 19 - In Isolation

Chapter 19 - In Isolation

Syndra knew Damian's mother, but that didn't give her any privileges in this place. Everything she did for Damian, he had to repay tenfold; nothing in this tower was free, especially not privileges for being strong.

"Who's stronger in the Northern War?"

"Why would you want to know that?" Syndra didn't quite understand Damian's thought process; he was a child but didn't always act like one, showing a keen interest in war, perhaps related to the death of his parents.

Damian smiled faintly and explained, "I don't like living under pressure, but if I need to be strong, I must be more aware of what lies ahead. Don't get me wrong, I'm no hero, and I have no interest in becoming one because my only intention is to kill demons to reach those who participated in exterminating my people."

The last time Syndra talked to him, it was a more ambiguous conversation, but now that she had come to him, it was time to inquire about the world to be more aware of what awaits a strong person.

Damian had an idea of how to become stronger and, naturally, didn't want to waste his future on worthless classes.

"Well, you have to come to terms with the fact that you're weak; compared to demons, humans are weak. The Seven Sages of Destruction, a group of seven powerful demons who served the Demon King, are more powerful than the strongest human mages today."

"Like all demons, they are individualistic beings with no sense of morality or compassion. They have a high amount of mana compared to humans; you, of course, like many others, are a small difference." Syndra said as she stood up and walked toward the door.

Pausing, Syndra looked at Damian and said, "If you want to direct your fury somewhere, kill one of the Seven Sages of Destruction."

"They were?" Damian fell silent after hearing that.

Syndra didn't say more, but she knew that behind Damian's faint smile was a determined look to kill. "Study; I know you know what you must do, so don't waste time with classes that won't serve you."

Watching Syndra leave, Damian returned his gaze to the table, where there was now a book. "Knowledge about demons?"

Syndra might be a stranger to Damian, but she knew perfectly well that she at least didn't want to see him die in foolishness.

Damian didn't rest even a single hour after Syndra left; what he did was select the most powerful spells to get an idea of what he would learn later.

But still, he woke up early in the morning, with dark circles under his eyes, and found Zack working on the fourth floor.

Zack was very excited to see Damian come. Tomorrow, he'll have to clean the hallway early in the morning, although he might not find anything; perhaps it's better not to go.

While Damian observed him, other servants wouldn't dare give him dangerous tasks.

"Sir, are you here to accept me as your exclusive servant?" Zack's eyes sparkled with excitement.

"I'll need you to do a lot of work for me; would you still be willing?" Damian needed an assistant who could bring him a lot of mud because he wanted to create a figure for his puppet.

But Zack didn't consider the work hard, so he said, "I'll be willing to do anything you need."

Damian glanced around and asked, "Have you seen anything noteworthy these days?"

Zack shook his head. "Nothing notable to mention; no one has talked about you again since everyone knows you're a mage now, so they're not foolish enough to talk about you."

Damian believed that most of his problems should be solved now, despite the clear disadvantages he had before.

Upon reflection, as long as he stays away from trouble, nothing could touch him in the coming years. "I'll talk to the butler about your transfer; I'll need you to help me find mud for my own creation and also take care of my meals."

"I'll be able to do that, my lord." Zack was excited to hear that Damian had accepted him as his personal servant.

What he needed now was a lot of mud to form the figure of his puppet, the famous Divine General of the Eight Divine Leaves. As long as he could give life to that incredible being that would serve as his vanguard, it would be more than enough to be at the forefront of the battle.

He now had all of Mark's notes, so knowing all the principles, he had what he needed to start his experiment that would occupy his free time where he needed relaxation.

"So start bringing the mud to my room; I'll need large quantities, so bring as much as you can without forgetting to rest. Remember, you're no use to me if you're not in a condition to follow my orders." Damian didn't know what would happen here in four years, but he at least hoped to be strong enough to stay alive and avenge the deaths of the parents of this body.

"I understand, my lord!" Zack knew what needed to be done in these situations, so he didn't say much; he would simply serve Damian because that was the only way to survive in this tower of mages.

Damian walked away. There wasn't much else to do in this place, so he walked out to the outer fields to watch the sunrise and start training his physique.

The things he would do from now on were to take refuge in his room while studying magic on his own, following the knowledge left by the inheritance he obtained a few days ago. He would train his body, and besides that, he wouldn't do anything else.
