Chapter 36 - He Tore My World Apart

As Li Wei's words hung in the air, Alex felt a surge of panic rising within him. He hadn't anticipated this conversation taking such a turn, and now he found himself at a loss for words. He glanced at Li Wei, searching for some sign of understanding in her eyes, but all he saw was resentment and anger.

"My wife..." Alex began, his voice trailing off as he struggled to find the right words. "Megan is... she's..."

But before he could finish his sentence, Li Wei cut him off with a sharp laugh. "Your wife," she spat, her voice dripping with scorn. "The woman who stole you away from me."

Alex winced at her words, the guilt gnawing at him like a festering wound. He knew that he had hurt Li Wei deeply when he left her all those years ago, but he had hoped that she would have moved on by now. Clearly, he had been mistaken.

"She didn't steal me away, Li Wei," Alex said, his voice pleading. "I love her, yes, but it's not like that. It's... complicated."

Li Wei rolled her eyes, her expression filled with disbelief. "Complicated?" she scoffed. "There's nothing complicated about it, Alex. You chose her over me, plain and simple."

Alex felt a surge of frustration rising within him. He knew that he couldn't change the past, couldn't undo the choices he had made, but he wished that Li Wei could at least understand his reasons – flawed as they may have been.

"I'm sorry, Li Wei," Alex said, his voice tinged with regret. "I never meant to hurt you. I never meant for any of this to happen."

But Li Wei just shook her head, her eyes blazing with anger. "Sorry isn't good enough, Alex," she said, her voice cold and unforgiving. "You made your choice, and now you have to live with the consequences."

With that, she turned on her heel and stormed out of the room, leaving Alex alone with his thoughts. He knew that he had a lot of work to do if he wanted to make things right with Li Wei, but for now, all he could do was focus on being there for Jake – the son he had neglected for far too long.

Megan stormed out of Alex's office building, her heart pounding with a mixture of anger and hurt. She couldn't believe that he would go out with another woman while she was waiting for him to come home. It was like a slap in the face after everything they had been through together.

As she made her way back to their apartment, Megan's mind raced with a whirlwind of emotions. She tried to push down the nagging doubts and insecurities that threatened to overwhelm her, but they lingered at the edges of her consciousness like a dark shadow.

When she finally arrived home, Megan threw herself onto the couch, her mind spinning with thoughts of Alex and the mysterious woman he had been seen with. She knew that she shouldn't jump to conclusions, but the idea of Alex being unfaithful cut her to the core.

She tried to distract herself by flipping through a magazine, but her mind kept drifting back to Alex and the woman. Who was she? What did she have that Megan didn't? And why would Alex choose to spend time with her instead of coming home to his wife?

As the hours ticked by, Megan's anxiety only grew stronger. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong, that Alex was keeping secrets from her. She wished she could confront him right then and there, but she knew that she needed to wait until he got home to hear his side of the story.

Finally, as the sun began to set and the sky turned a deep shade of orange, Megan heard the familiar sound of keys jingling in the lock. She held her breath as Alex stepped through the door, his face illuminated by a sheepish grin.

"Hey, honey," he said, his voice tinged with guilt. "Sorry I'm late. I got caught up at work."

Megan forced a smile, her heart sinking at the sight of him. She wanted so badly to confront him about the woman he had been seen with, but she knew that she needed to tread carefully if she didn't want to start a fight.

"It's okay," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "I'm just glad you're home now."

But even as she spoke the words, Megan couldn't shake the feeling of unease that gnawed at her insides. She knew that she needed to find out the truth about Alex's whereabouts earlier that day, no matter how painful it might be.

As Alex disappeared into the bedroom to change out of his work clothes, Megan made up her mind. She was going to confront him about the woman, and she wasn't going to let him off the hook until she got some answers. It was time to lay all their cards on the table and see where they stood.

Megan's heart pounded with fury as she stared at the message on Alex's phone. Her hands trembled with a mixture of anger and disbelief as she read the words over and over again. "Hope you have gotten home my love" it said, signed by someone named Li Wei. Who was this woman, and why was she calling Alex "my love"?

Before she could stop herself, Megan's hand shot out and slapped Alex across the face, the sound echoing through the room like a gunshot. Alex recoiled in shock, his hand flying to his cheek as he stumbled backward.

"Megan, what the hell?" he exclaimed, his eyes wide with surprise and confusion.

"Don't you dare play dumb with me," Megan spat, her voice dripping with venom. "Who is Li Wei, and why is she calling you 'my love'?"

Alex's face paled at the mention of the name, his eyes darting around the room as if searching for an escape. "Li Wei is... she's just a friend," he stammered, his voice faltering under Megan's furious gaze.

"A friend?" Megan scoffed, her anger boiling over. "That doesn't explain why she's calling you 'my love'! Are you cheating on me, Alex? Is that what this is?"

Alex's eyes widened with shock at the accusation, but before he could respond, Megan lunged at him, her fists flying in a blind rage. Alex stumbled backward, trying to shield himself from her blows, but Megan was relentless. She screamed obscenities at him, her words laced with hurt and betrayal as she unleashed years of pent-up frustration and anger.

In the heat of the moment, Alex's temper flared, and he lashed out in return. He grabbed Megan by the shoulders and shoved her roughly against the wall, his hands closing around her throat as he pinned her against the cold surface.

"You have no right to accuse me of cheating," he growled, his voice low and dangerous. "You think you're so perfect, but you're just as flawed as the rest of us."

Megan gasped for air, her vision swimming as Alex's grip tightened around her neck. She struggled against him, clawing at his arms in a desperate bid for freedom, but his hold only grew stronger with each passing second.

Just when Megan thought she couldn't take it anymore, Alex released her with a shove, sending her crashing to the ground in a heap. She lay there, gasping for breath and trembling with fear as Alex stormed out of the house, leaving her alone in the darkness.

As the adrenaline began to fade, Megan felt a wave of numbness wash over her. She couldn't believe what had just happened. Her marriage, once filled with love and laughter, had devolved into a nightmare of lies and violence.

But even as she lay there, battered and broken, Megan knew that she couldn't give up. She had to find out the truth about Alex and this mysterious woman named Li Wei. And no matter what it took, she was determined to uncover the secrets that threatened to tear her world apart.
