Chapter 9 - Aurelia Blackwell

Louise's revelation hung in the air, a delicate thread connecting past and present. The town hall's imposing doors seemed to hold more than just secrets—they harbored a promise, a choice that would alter the course of my life.

I glanced at the portraits lining the walls. Mayors and council members stared down at me, their stern expressions softened by the passage of time. What had they faced within these walls? What decisions had shaped their destinies?

Louise led me forward, her heels echoing off the marble floor. The chandelier above us sparkled, its rainbows dancing like forgotten dreams. I wondered if this place held answers about my own existence, about why Louise had become both my protector and my enigma.

As we reached the massive wooden door, I hesitated. Adoption—a word laden with hope and uncertainty. I had questions, but Louise's silence persisted. She pushed the door open, revealing a room bathed in golden light.

Inside, a council awaited a diverse group of individuals, their faces etched with wisdom and compassion. They rose from their seats, acknowledging Louise with nods and smiles. I stood at the threshold, caught between my old life and this unexpected opportunity.

Louise's grip on my hand never wavered. She guided me forward, introducing me to each council member. Their names blurred together—Mr. Patel, Dr. García, Mayor Thompson. They welcomed me, their eyes kind yet probing.

As the council members welcomed me, their eyes kind yet probing, I felt a mixture of excitement and apprehension swirling within me. This moment, standing on the threshold of a new chapter in my life, felt surreal yet strangely comforting. Louise's hand in mine provided a sense of grounding amidst the uncertainty.

One of the men stepped forward, his presence commanding attention. His voice resonated through the room as he addressed us,

"Today we are here so that Mrs. Louise Blackwell can adopt Aurelia, who is 6 years old." He took out a piece of paper with an adoption document written on it, and Louise began to fill it in with precise, deliberate strokes of the pen.

I watched her movements with a mix of curiosity and anticipation, wondering what it meant to officially become her child.

As the man turned to me, his gaze warm and gentle, I felt a surge of nervousness. I realized that I didn't know how to read or write, a fact that suddenly felt daunting in this formal setting. But before I could voice my uncertainty, he spoke directly to me, his voice reassuring,

"Aurelia, do you want to officially become Louise's child?"

"Yes," I replied without hesitation, my voice barely above a whisper yet resolute in its conviction. LOuise had taken care of me for more than a month and she had always so kind even if sometimes she wasn't here but I was okay with that.

The man nodded kindly, understanding my simple affirmation. He handed me the sheet of paper that Louise had just filled in, and I held it in my hands, the weight of its significance settling upon me.

"Sign it, but don't worry, you can just make a cross and it will count as your signature," the man reassured me.

His words eased my apprehension, offering a simple solution to my dilemma. With a steady hand, I took the pen and made a cross on the paper, the ink marking the beginning of a new chapter in my life.

As I completed the signature, the room erupted into applause, the sound echoing off the walls like a chorus of affirmation. I looked up, meeting Louise's proud gaze, and a surge of warmth flooded my heart. In that moment, surrounded by strangers yet enveloped in their support, I felt a sense of belonging unlike anything I had ever known.

"Well done, now you're Aurelia Blackwell," Louise spoke up, her voice filled with pride and affection.

Her words washed over me like a gentle embrace, anchoring me to this newfound identity. Aurelia Blackwell—a name that now held the weight of belonging, of love, of family.

As the council members offered their congratulations, I couldn't help but smile, feeling the weight of uncertainty lift from my shoulders. In this room filled with history and promise, I had found a new beginning a journey of love and belonging that awaited me as Aurelia Blackwell, the newest member of Louise's family.

As Louise's proud words resonated in the room, I couldn't contain the bubbling excitement within me. Becoming Aurelia Blackwell filled me with a sense of belonging and anticipation for the adventures that lay ahead. But as Louise gently nudged me, her expression soft yet determined, I knew it was time to leave the grandeur of the town hall behind.

"It's time to go home now, Aurelia," Louise said, her voice warm with affection. With a quick nod, I rose from my seat, eager to embark on the next part of our journey together. We made our way out of the building, the cool breeze of the afternoon air refreshing against my skin.

Outside, the car waited for us, its sleek exterior gleaming in the sunlight. My excitement bubbled over as I hurried to the vehicle, anticipation coursing through my veins. I couldn't wait to return home, to begin this new chapter of my life as Aurelia Blackwell.

As I settled into the plush seat of the car, Louise joined me, her presence a comforting anchor by my side. The driver closed the door with a gentle click, and soon we were on our way, the scenery passing by in a blur of colors and shapes.

The journey home was filled with anticipation, each passing moment bringing us closer to the warmth and familiarity of our house. I couldn't wait to go home and sleep a little bit because I was tired.

Once we arrived, I bounded out of the car, my heart racing with excitement. But as we stepped into the living room, I was met with a surprising sight. Several people were gathered in the lounge, their faces unfamiliar yet menacing.

"What's going on?" I asked Louise, turning to her with a curious expression. There was a strange energy in the air, a sense of anticipation mingled with uncertainty.

"I'm going to introduce you to the people who are going to teach you how to read and write, and you'll learn good manners and have sword training too, and I'm going to teach you magic myself," Louise said, her tone and menacing. It was a revelation that took me by surprise, a sudden shift in our dynamic that left me feeling both excited and apprehensive.

As Louise spoke, I felt a change in her demeanor, a sense of hatred  that filled me with fear. "I'll show you what it's like to be a real Blackwell," she finished, her words carrying a weight power.
