Wei Anning was engrossed in her book and, suddenly coming back to her senses, saw Leng Youchen sitting in his wheelchair, watching her from a distance neither far nor near. His gaze was inscrutable, leaving her unable to fathom its depth and startling her.
"Why are you staring at me like that? It's quite terrifying," she said, rubbing the goosebumps on her arms. Looking up, she realized it had grown dark outside. She twisted her stiff neck and rose from the sofa, stretching her back.
Leng Youchen withdrew his gaze impassively and lifted his proud, resolute chin to nod toward the tray on the coffee table. On the tray were several bone china dishes filled with exquisite and delicious dishes, "I had the kitchen prepare a few of your favorite dishes. Eat before you continue reading."
