Chapter 14 - New or Humble Beginnings?

Hunter's eyes surveyed his new apartment upon his arrival. The one bedroom apartment was what you'd expect it to be; empty and filled with dust. Hunter sneezed and wiped his eyes afterwards.

[Looks like you'll need to clean this place up before you even get settled down]

"The landlord was supposed to have this place clean by the time I arrived... Whatever. I need to get some supplies anyways. Might as well hit up the supply store," said Hunter as he placed his bags down and walked out.

[Speaking of going outside...]

Hunter sighed and locked the door behind him, immediately running afterwards. He pulled out his phone and realised that it had a cracked screen. He's had this "hand me down" of a phone for as long as he could remember and it was quite old.

How old? It still had buttons on it.

[You don't exactly need it since you have me, but you do have enough money to buy a new cellphone. I'd suggest getting one in order to stay in contact with loved ones. Perhaps, even future friends]

"... I don't need it. Catherine really was the only person I could contact with this busted up piece of crap," replied Hunter. "And besides, it still works," he added with a gentle smile.

As he clicked the on button of his phone, the screen remained black and wouldn't turn on. Without even looking at System Rosana, Hunter sighed and shoved the deceased brick into his pocket hoodie, and began picking up his pace as he ran down the hall.

[You might want to reconsider, considering that-]

"I know, System Rosana," Hunter quickly cut System Rosana off.

After leaving his apartment complex, Hunter began jogging, immediately starting his training regimen. Along the way, he bought cleaning supplies and products from the store, such as a mattress, bedding sheets and a blanket from a home themed store.

After finding a secluded alley, Hunter quickly shoved his newly bought items into his [Infinite Inventory]. The toughest item to stash was certainly his mattress as it was too large to fit through the small ripple.

But, after analysing the size of the mattress, System Rosana increased the ripple's size, allowing the mattress to just slide right through the [Infinite Inventory] without any more troubles. Hunter smiled at the system and continued his run.

On his way back to his new home, he passed by a weapon's dealer and immediately stopped to look at it. His head tilted in curiosity as he looked at the weapons in display.

Various swords and guns were hung up, along with bows, crossbows and a bunch of other weapons. System Rosana floated next to Hunter and closely watched him.

[Hunter Quinn, what ever happened to the steel dagger I gifted you the night you and I first met?]

Hunter slowly averted his gaze from the system and promptly walked into the weapon's dealer.

[I suppose getting a new weapon would be more beneficial to you in the long run. Considering that you can close the gap between you and your enemies while also maintaining some distance shows that any weapon would be perfect for you]

'It can't just be any weapon though. I need a weapon that'll boost my black flames while also increasing my mana. I don't want to fight a dungeon master as strong as the Diabolic Spider Queen unless I have a proper weapon.'

[Sounds like you need a sacred weapon. Unfortunately for you, only tier 5 hunters can afford such luxurious items. You might have to settle for the Hellhound Chains for the time being]

Sacred weapons, as the name suggests, are powerful and rare weapons that were forged by the dwarves, short human like beings capable of forging nearly any weapon imaginable, themselves.

Although they are rare, a few hunters have been able to snag a sacred weapon or two upon clearing dungeons of higher tiers as a reward.

Hunter sighed after looking at the prices displayed for the weapons. He was in a predicament. If he did buy a new weapon, he would have to dungeon dive atleast 5 times this week alone just to cover future expenses.

'Who the hell would buy a weapon worth $20,000?! It's not even that good! All it does is multiply your attack by 25%' complained Hunter as he looked at a pair of mechanical knuckles.

[Property Enhancer has the same enchantment, Hunter Quinn]

'Propery Enhancer allows me to increase the power of any weapon. If I dungeon dove with a party, I'd be able to use my blood to increase their weapons' property too,' replied Hunter.

[I'd advise against that. Using black magic for your own benefit is good. But, if you use it for other people, they might try to take advantage of you. You should keep to yourself unless you want to be in danger.

Dangerous hunters lurk in every corner of the world]

It wasn't as if System Rosana was trying to scare Hunter. Even though it was partially because of that, it meant that Hunter is supposed to keep his abilities a secret.

With the Hunting Guild Investigation Force currently curious about his survival, he would need to be wary of how he uses his powers and be certain that he doesn't draw too much attention to himself. If he did, he would certainly pay the price.

Hunter scratched the back of his head and made his way towards the exit. As he did, he accidentally bumped into a young woman about his age.

"Oh, I'm sorry about that," he said as he moved in the other direction and walked out.

The young woman looked at Hunter in curiosity as she watched him walk away, tilting her head as he did. Then, she returned to her business. And, so did Hunter, who finally completed his 13km run.

After buying some fast food from a restaurant, he returned home, ready to start the first phase of him cleansing the world.

He would begin by cleansing his home. After pulling the cleaning supplies and products from his [Infinite Inventory], Hunter rolled his sleeves back and began cleaning up. After dusting and sweeping, he mopped the living room, his bedroom, the kitchen and the bathroom.

After about an hour, he was finally done with cleaning. His stomach was already grumbling, but he decided to complete his objectives for the day before eating. Once his workout routine was done for the day, he made his way to the bath and cleaned himself up.

After the bath, Hunter had changed into more comfortable clothes and began eating his chicken and fries. As he sat on his mattress, he looked out the window and watched the people walking down the street.

The Sun slowly set, highlighting the city in a slightly orange colour. The light bounced off the reflective buildings and Hunter's eyes widened in awe.

"I wonder if I'll be able to get a proper life if I become strong enough," said Hunter.

[The stronger you are, the more likely you'll become chosen by a guild in order to support your finances]

"That's true. But, I'm not sure if any guild's gonna pick me considering my terrible track record."

[The future may be nothing without the past, but that shouldn't define the type of person you are now, or the person you will become in the future]

Hunter looked at the floating talking orb in front of him and widened his eyes.

After smiling gently, he looked at System Rosana and said, "Look at you being all philosophical. I thought you were nothing but an annoying servant. I must've had the wrong idea."

[Indeed you did, you ingrate. You still haven't forgotten our goal, have you?]

With a serious expression, Hunter looked at the system and said, "Of course I haven't forgotten. It's the reason why I wake up everyday. It's also the reason why I can't sleep properly anymore."

[Good. Finish your food. You're headed to another tier 16 dungeon. Complete 4 more of those, and you'll be a tier 17]

"My progress seems way too slow though. Sure, I'm evolving way quicker than when I became a tier 18. But, shouldn't I be atleast at the level of a tier 14 hunter?"

[Hunter Quinn, you are still incapable of killing a tier 16 Dungeon Master on your own. What makes you think you have the abilities, strength and capabilities of a tier 14 hunter?]

"That's fair... You didn't have to be so harsh about it though," responded Hunter as he squinted his eyes and frowned at System Rosana.

[I am the only one who will tell you the truth. I am also the only one who will help you to become a better version of yourself. Words only hurt if they ring true]

Hunter rolled his eyes and smirked.

"I guess you're right..."
