Chapter 25 - Awkward Encounter

Once he got back to his room in Elder Loren's home, he immediately used a couple of personal healing spells after removing his clothing in order to heal his legs and arm fully, which once again almost completely depleted his mana.

Lastly, before he went to sleep, he used the tub inside of his room to take a nice relaxing bath. Once he got out of it, he felt a lot better. The second his head hit his pillow after laying down, he passed out.

Waking up the next day, he dressed in a nice white tunic and pants he had purchased and left his room to join Elder Loren in the dining area for breakfast.

"You looked pretty rough coming in yesterday, rough fight with the herbs?"

Kayn had grown used to her snarky and joking attitude in the few days he had spent with her so he naturally knew how he wanted to reply.

"Of course, those herbs are more savage than a wyvern that just had its egg stolen, turn your back and they try to swipe your legs from under you."

Elder Loren just chuckled and asked her next question, "So will you be working today or resting?"

"I'll be working today Elder. In fact, I'll probably work for the next five or so days in a row. I would like to work on my techniques and spells, there is no better way to perfect a spell than practice."

"Good, I'll be out today anyway. I have a pregnant lady to deliver and I don't want to rush her. I'm not advanced enough with my diagnostic spells to know for sure, but I'm guessing she'll be having triplets."

After breakfast Elder Loren gathered up her things and left the house. This left Kayn to open up shop, which he did about half an hour after she left.

The morning passed steadily with Kayn mostly having to look at minor injuries or performing simple exams. After the lunch hour, Kayn opened the door again only to find a familiar face sitting on the bench outside waiting to be seen by a healer.

"Ah, I heard that Elder Loren had a new assistant, will she be able to spend a bit of time healing me today? My name is Kinzie, I have many injuries and I'm not sure how long it would take as I don't want to exhaust her too much." Kinzie asked with a warm pain filled smile.

'I guess I should have expected her to show up since it was my advice to get looked at by a healer.' Kayn thought to himself as he gestured for her to enter into the house.

"Unfortunately, Elder Loren is out today on a home appointment, but I assure you I can perform the healing for you."

Kayn had seen her wounds up close, so he was positive he could heal them. Normally a tier three healing spell would be required for it, but Kayn even had a tier one spell that he invented which he was positive would work just as well if not better.

Kinzie had several deep lacerations on both her arms and legs. Kayn had also discovered that she had a lacerated kidney. He noted it during his original diagnosis in the cave when she was unconscious, which was one of the main reasons he suggested she should see a healer.

Kayn was glad that she had shown up, otherwise without treatment there was a possibility she could die from her internal injuries and the blood emptying into her abdominal cavity. That would mean he wasted his time saving her in the first place.

Honesty, he was surprised she didn't look worse than she did currently. Even though Kinzie had a near peak stage 1 core, it wasn't until the third stage where the body would start to have increased natural healing. This also depended largely on one's race, but most averages were set from human and demon data as they had the highest populations in Lavanth.

Kinzie, however, was a half-elf. This meant that her body's natural healing would increase once she reached the second stage, it was only a minor increase, but an increase none-the-less.

"How do you know you'll be able to heal me?" Kinzie asked with a curious expression on her face.

"Elder Loren wouldn't have left me alone if I was incompetent, please follow me to the exam room. I'll first perform a diagnostic spell and unwrap your wounds to clean them before treatment."

Kayn gestured towards the room assigned to him, and Kinzie obediently went into the room and sat on the examination table before lying down.

Once Kinzie was comfortably laying down, Kayn performed his personal diagnostic spell that he was continuously working on. He called it Void Eye since it allowed him to see through each tissue layer, but it mainly depended on how familiar he was with the anatomy of the race. He was still trying to determine a way to perform MRI and CT scan type magics to see tissues better, so this is the best he could do.

After Kayn ensured his first diagnosis was correct, he told Kinzie what he found and what he would have to do. He also noted that the first priority was to heal her internal injuries.

Kayn first healed those, including her kidney. Only then did he move on to the limbs, focusing on the deepest wounds first. Once everything was mended back together, Kayn cleaned off her wound sites since they were healed over.

There were still minor bruises and some of the wounds would require just a little time for his spell's influence to fully affect the tissues.

"You should be feeling quite a bit better now. However, a couple of my spells increase your body's natural healing and redirect nutrients to the affected areas, so it may take until tomorrow before you feel fully better. Please return tomorrow morning so that I can check everything over once again.

"Since I'm not Elder Loren and I'm allowed to set my own prices, I will only charge 15 copper coins for the healing today. 10 for the internal injuries and 5 for the limb lacerations."

As Kinzie handed Kayn his fee, she asked something that had bothered her since she first took a good look at Kayn.

"You're about the same height and your eyes are as bright red as his, are you perhaps Shin? I forgot to ask your name and you neglected to introduce yourself."

Kayn didn't show any change of expression on his face, but internally he was sweating. "Ah I forgot, my apologies. My name is Kayn, and red eyes are not uncommon for those with demon blood, however if you look closely into mine, you will see thin black rings around my pupils. Did this Shin have these as well?"

Most people were not as observant of everything around them and smaller details as Kayn was, therefore he was 95% sure that Kinzie hadn't noticed his eye rings. But that did mean in the future Kayn needed a way to veil his eyes, so in the case he met her again, she wouldn't notice.

"Now that you mention it, you're right. I didn't notice that aspect in his eyes, sorry for the trouble. And now that I think about it, your elements are different so there's no way you could be him.

"I will come by tomorrow for my follow-up, thank you Kayn for your help. If it's not rude of me to ask, what rank is your core? You seem very young and to heal wounds such as mine would require enough mana for at least a tier 3 spell the way you described it."

Kinzie seemed to be probing Kayn's power, but he didn't mind telling her half-truth and half-lie.

"My core is in the last part of the first stage, as for the mana usage, it's manageable because these are personal spells, so they are tier 2 maximum."

"That's very impressive to have already invented spells. Thank you again and I'll see you tomorrow" Kinzie waved as she walked out of the building with smooth steps unlike when she entered.

Kayn sighed once she walked out of the door. He was sweating bullets internally hoping she would forget about his and Shin's similarities.

'I can use basic shadow manipulation to veil my eyes, it's just going to require constant practice, so I guess I'll start working on that now.' Kayn thought with a long sigh.

The next day Kinzie showed up again and just as expected, her healing had finished overnight.

"Looks like you're all good to go back out doing whatever you do Miss Kinzie. Good luck and try not to get hurt again, but if you do, I'll be here."

Kayn was wearing a short-sleeved tunic today instead of the long sleeve white one he wore yesterday. When he waved his arms around while gesturing, Kinzie paid extra attention to his left arm just to check if it had any evidence of being broken or bitten.

Seeing no bite marks, she sighed internally because she thought for sure Kayn was hiding something, but there was no evidence to confirm her suspicions. It was surprising though that he actually had scars on both arms. Though, she thought it impolite to ask about them or why he hadn't healed them properly as he was a healer.

A week later and after working as a healer and perfecting his veil for all these days, Kayn decided to work as an adventurer again. So, after changing his persona to Shin he showed up at the guild hall. As Kayn was walking up to the front counter, a familiar figure stepped in front of him.

"Well, I see your arm is all healed, that's good." Kinzie stated as she approached in front of Kayn.

She looked deeper into his eyes than she had when he rescued her, but saw only the crimson of his eyes, there were no black rings around his pupils.

"Yes, I went to the healer here in town, he does good work." Kayn nodded as he confirmed that his arm was indeed healed.

"Well Shin, seeing as how we are both D-rankers now, how about we work as a team from now on? I'm an excellent scout and I'm sure I can assist you on any type of mission."

Kinzie was straight forward with her desire to work with the adventurer named Shin. He was strong and seemed intelligent, so partying up with him would be the best decision for her survival and mission completion rate.

"I refuse." Kayn was blunt, he didn't want to party up with anyone, his missions were easier alone since he could use his full power. Plus, he didn't want to give up his practice time that he used to develop his techniques and spells.

Unfortunately for Kayn, Kinzie was quite stubborn and wouldn't take no for an answer. Kayn eventually gave in and agreed to do a single hunting mission with her twice a week, but for every other mission he would go alone to improve himself.
