Chapter 1 - Code 19... again!

*BEEP BEEP BEEP

The alarm rung it was code 19.

We leave our training, grab our trusty weapons and hastily make our way to the alarm source, the east gates. The most important energy source of our small settlement is being stored in a warehouse located within close proximity of those gates.

It is the beating heart of our settlement and probably the reason why many of us haven't starved to death, yet. For in this hostile barren wasteland we somehow have persevered for about 50 years since this settlement was founded. It was a cruel fate to live on this world for the rest of your life, and usually an unjust fate.

This energy source which not many people even know the name of, contents or properties is the reason why we are still alive and the reason why we came here in the first place. To mine this planet's reserves of this resource until depletion. Then and only then we may be allowed to return to our home planets. Maybe they will send someone to pick us up. Maybe they'll only come pick up what we have mined leave us here until we rot and die.

As we got closer to the source of the alarm adrenalin rushed through my viens, with my heart pounding. I sweat and shake uncontrollably. If you couldn't tell, I was afraid and very much so in fact. The captain signals for us to remain in cover, even though we can all see what caused the alarm to go off.

Just in front of where that energy source is being stored six fresh kills lay on the ground. The sight was... well brutal would be an understatement.

One of them had its eyes gouged out of their sockets, it's ribcage was fully exposed, punctured lungs, limbs completely separated from the body, the brain was turned into a mush and the corpse's heart was still beating in its chest.

But the culprit was not there.

We slowly neared closer to the bodies and kept an eye out for any possible clues. My heart was beating faster and faster but I tried to stay calm. We checked around the bodies and inside them for clues, but nothing.

It was as if it the bodies self-destructed from the inside completely on their own. And the warehouse, where that precious energy source is being stored was in perfect condition, no bruises, dents, cuts or explosions. Then again it is a 1 meter thick cube built out of reinforced platinum so it isn't that big of a surprise that it was in perfect condition.

I sighed, "Well off that bastard goes again and back we go not catching him! " I thought to myself.

These attacks have been getting more and more frequent recently. The very first one was three months ago at the front gate with one casualty, the second one was last month over at the west gate where our food supplies are stored, with two casualties. And over the past three weeks we've had four more such attacks, each with three casualties.

Yet it was very wierd, since the killer or killers only, well... killed I guess. They did not steal food or destroy infrastructure or try to get into the warehouse. Which is wierd if you ask me.

This was another fruitless night with six new casualties. We headed back to the barracks. I needed to get a good night's rest if I was going to be ready for tomorrow.

" Come on Ezra don't lose hope just yet, we'll get that killer next time. " I said to myself before going to bed.
