Chapter 9 - Journey To Suthur

"As the ground split open, holy knights tumbled into the abyss, along with the prince and his aides," said a man clad in dark armor adorned with silver designs, the hallmark of the holy empire of Intrisha. "We have no way of knowing if they are all still alive."

"Regardless, we would still continue with our mission as directed by the goddess," the man declared, standing resolute outside a tent that seemed too extravagant for its surroundings.

"Do we have any cause for concern?" a voice cautiously inquired from within the tent.

The man outside the tent fell silent, his brow furrowed in deep thought as he weighed his next words carefully. Each syllable carried the weight of their uncertain circumstances, and he knew that his response could shape the course of their actions.

Taking a deep breath, he finally spoke, his voice measured yet decisive. "We cannot afford to falter now," he declared, his words carrying a note of determination. "The path before us may be fraught with peril, but we must remain steadfast in our resolve. Our mission is clear, and we will see it through to the end, no matter the cost, as long as the goddess be with us we cannot fail."

"You are a good man, Sir Molsic," the voice spoke from within the tent, its tone laden with gravity and respect.

"A knight of your stature should be leading a contingent of knights instead of serving as a sub-commander in our modest subjugation party," the voice remarked as the curtains of the tent parted slowly, revealing the paladin emerging from within.

Sir Molsic inclined his head slightly, acknowledging the paladin's words with a solemn expression. "I appreciate your confidence in me, but our roles are determined by the needs of the mission," he replied, his voice tinged with humility. "Every member of our party plays a vital role in the success of our endeavor, regardless of rank or title."

The paladin regarded Sir Molsic with a thoughtful expression, a hint of admiration in his eyes. "You speak true, as always," he conceded, his tone softened by respect. "Yet, I cannot help but feel that your leadership would inspire greater confidence among our ranks."

Sir Molsic offered a small smile in response, a glimmer of pride shining through his stoic demeanor. "We each have our part to play," he said simply, his gaze turning toward the horizon where their journey awaited. "Let us focus on the task at hand and trust in the strength of our knights."

"It's been eight days since that earthquake in the forest, hasn't it?" remarked the paladin, his voice carrying a note of reflection.

"We lost a few knights there. Luckily, being an advanced troop, we were not dragged into the sinkhole the earthquake created," he remarked once more, his tone tinged with a somber acknowledgment of the losses they had suffered as his mind portrayed moments of images flashing is rhythmic motions.

He recalled hearing a loud noise and the screams of the troops he had assigned to guard the prince. Their orders were clear: to watch over them and ensure that the prince and his guardians did not attack their troops from behind. It was a delicate balance, as they could not let the prince's party take charge of the mission, but they also couldn't risk leaving them vulnerable to attacks from other quarters.

As the paladin reflected on the events, a sense of unease crept over him. The delicate dance of diplomacy and strategic positioning weighed heavily on his mind. They had to maintain the appearance of cooperation while still safeguarding their own interests and objectives. It was a precarious balance that required careful navigation, especially in the midst of the chaos unleashed by the earthquake.

Despite their advanced positioning, the paladin couldn't shake the feeling of responsibility for the lost knights under his command. Each loss was a blow to their mission and a reminder of the dangers that lurked in the shadows of the unknown.

The paladin's gaze fell upon the man he had addressed as Molsic, taking in the details of his appearance with a thoughtful expression. The man's piercing blue eyes seemed to hold a depth of experience and determination, while his long blonde hair cascaded down his shoulders in a golden mane. His beard, a shade of brown with hints of gold, framed his face with a rugged yet distinguished air. Despite the gravity of their conversation, there was a sense of quiet strength and resolve in the man's demeanor, a testament to his years of service and leadership.

With a heavy sigh, the paladin began to slowly walk away from Sir Molsic, his footsteps echoing through the camp. However, Sir Molsic fell into step behind him, his presence a silent but steadfast support. Together, they moved through the camp, passing by rows of knights who bowed their heads in deference to the paladin as he passed.

As they walked, the paladin's gaze swept over the injured and the fallen, a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made in service of their cause. Some knights bore only bruises, while others lay injured and in pain. Tragically, a few lay lifeless, their bodies a stark testament to the dangers they faced in their mission. Each sight weighed heavily on the paladin's heart, strengthening his resolve to lead his remaining knights.

"Men!" the paladin's voice echoed across the camp, commanding attention from all who heard. "I do not know the fate of the prince of the kingdom, but hear me now. Whether he lives or not makes no difference, for our mission remains unchanged. We shall deliver divine punishment to the monsters that the goddess seeks to eradicate."

His words carried a weight of determination and conviction, instilling a sense of purpose in the hearts of his knights.

In a thunderous chorus, the knights around him raised their voices in a resounding declaration of their conviction. Each roar echoed through the camp, a testament to their unwavering resolve and determination to carry out their sacred mission.

As the time came for the holy knights to set out into the perilous plains of Suthur, they stood at the ready, armed and prepared for the impending battle. Clad in their gleaming armor and wielding their formidable weapons, they exuded an aura of unwavering determination and steely resolve. Each knight bore the weight of their sacred duty upon their shoulders, their hearts ablaze with righteous fervor as they marched forward to confront the darkness that threatened their land.

With the paladin at the forefront, the holy knights marched boldly into the expansive plains of Suthur, their ranks moving with disciplined precision. As they traversed the rugged terrain, they encountered small gremlins skulking at the edge of the plains, their malevolent presence a harbinger of the dangers that lay ahead. With swift and decisive action, the knights engaged the vile creatures in battle, their swords flashing in the sunlight as they cleaved through the ranks of their diminutive foes. With each strike, the gremlins fell before the might of the holy knights, their influence over the land slowly being purged by the fury of their attackers. Amidst the chaos of battle, the paladin's commanding presence inspired his troops to fight with unwavering valor, their blades stained with crimson blood, carving a path of righteousness through the heart of the inhabitants of the plains of suthur.
