Bethany's POV
The knock on my bedroom door was soft, almost hesitant. Strange, considering Mason's staff had been trained to be invisible. They didn't knock, they didn't linger, and they certainly didn't disturb me unless they had orders to. I glanced up from the book I wasn't reading, my gaze narrowing. Who was it this time?
"Come in," I called, keeping my tone even.
The door opened, and Emily stepped inside. Her eyes darted around the room like she expected Mason to materialize out of the shadows. When she was satisfied we were alone, she shut the door quietly behind her.
"What is it?" I asked, my voice sharper than I intended.
Emily flinched but didn't back away. She was braver than most of the staff, I'd give her that.
"I need to speak with you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's important."
