Living with Mason was like moments in your life when you feel like you're drowning, gasping for air that never quite comes. His presence was everywhere, like this invisible pressure that clung to my skin, pressing down harder and harder until it felt like I might cave in on myself completely.
But tonight? Tonight, thankfully he wasn't here.
The packhouse felt better without him. No heavy footsteps echoing down the hall, no clipped orders barked out to anyone who dared stray into his line of sight. For the first time in weeks, maybe months, I could hear my own thoughts. I could finally breathe.
