This action not only made it difficult for Stan to act but also reduced the perceived threat, clearly a signal of goodwill.
Consequently, while Stan's hand remained at his waist, his expression softened noticeably.

After glancing at the dust-covered stool, Chief Stan ultimately decided not to sit down.
As an experienced chief of police, he could tell at first glance that Medea was not sitting there voluntarily, but was tied to the chair.
